These are people who adore the saga so much that they often anticipatorily resent its creator for the possibility that it might not end satisfyingly. (Or end at all.) They have too much invested in this saga to implicitly trust its very creator. To satiate and perhaps calm these nervous followers, Martin has been reading sample chapters aloud from Winds of Winter. Fans who don't read the books, however, are unconcerned with these developments; their primary issue is one of spoilage, because readers have a tendency to dissect events before HBO even has a chance to shoot them (the Red Wedding is not really a wedding — discuss). But the two factions have brokered an uneasy peace and learned to trade theories (Who is Jon Snow's mother? Was Ned Stark even his father?). Peace has been brokered for, Mimi. There will be no flipping of tables. Let's discuss which APOIAF host will marry an HBO producer/exec or GoT star to form a marriage alliance that will further strengthen this fragile peace. Kyle and Emilia Clarke? Mimi and Emilia Clarke? Amin and the uncast actor who will be Oberyn Martell? Ashley and Esme Bianco?

Personally, I think Ashley and Rory McCann would get along swimmingly.

I don't feel like we know Rory McCann enough to know how he'd get along with Ashley. If only we knew him better...

If only if only. Well, they'll just have to marry so we can know for sure!

I just spent twenty minutes trying to find the source and failed. What I remember is that he lived alone on a time on some little island or way out in the woods, in a small house with no electricity. He seems to me to be sort of a romantic. Lived in caves when he was younger, paints, makes music, read LOTR in between chopping down trees... So whaddya say, Ashley?

Nice to have the podcast listed What do they mean about trade[ing] theories, though? What legitimate theories have the TV-Viewing (only) audience provided that the readers didn't already have?

There probably aren't any legitimate ones, but there would definitely be some pretty strange ones out there

I had a rant written out about this article earlier today, but I accidentally deleted it and I didn't have the enrgy to rewrite it.
I'm with Amin. 'Trade' theories? As Mimi said in episode 89, you pat them on their headgear and say "that's a nice theory, I totally agree that the Shadowbaby is about to kill Joffrey." (a TV show theory I actually heard between episodes 3 and 4). Most TV show viewers can't remember what happened two episodes ago, so most theories aren't even supported in the show, let alone the books. It's not their fault, it's just the TV medium. Unless you're writing a sitcom, any plot related clues aren't found until a character spells it out while whores play with each others asses. Littlefinger made plenty of references to his love of Catelyn and his fight with Brandon Stark, yet I've had people say that this was 'out of the blue' when he brought it up in front of Ros and co. With a book, you can flip back and find the passage you missed where it said that Tyrion talked with the smiths to make him a chain. In the TV show, you would have to wait until the DVD came out if you wanted to confirm something like that.
I alos hate the 'outsider looking in' perspective on the fandom. They aren't very nice about us, are they? They make us out to be a bunch of grumpy, whining whingers who do nothing but spoil the books for TV viewers and complain that GRRM isn't writing fast enough. Hmph. They could have asked any fan to describe their own fandom better. It's the whole Henry Jenkins thing.

Guys they're a magazine primarily about tv ( i think), why would they not be overly deferential to the tv viewing portion of the fandom?

The article did a good job of explaining the two fandoms and the co-mingling of them, I think. It would have been cool if the fandom was labeled "A Song of Ice and Fire" fans, but so it goes.

Regardless of the rest of what they say ( including Harry Potter being listed under Twilight, which is... ugh, I can't even start...) this is a pretty high-profile shout-out, guys! Especially as it's nestled so nicely in the number-one spot. Congratulations!

To be fair, my first fandom was twilight, though after about 4 months of liking it I became snarky and bitter and wrote crackfics paying out the series, whereas Harry potter didn't have the same snarky ammunition.
Also laughing forever at tv viewers being called "Unsullied". I hope they're not calling themselves that... Demonstrating why they should read the books, really. :p

On viewer theories/predictions, some of my favorites that were made mid-season two. Quote: I predict zombie Renly from the way he died, Tywin probably gets killed by Jaqen H'ghar, and Brienne most likely gets to kill Stannis. Quote: I predict Theon tries and fails to take Winterfell with his tiny crew and returns to his rightful status as bitch of the north. (This was before he actually did that.) Quote: I think King Robert will wake up and it will have all been a dream. His night was dark and full of terrors. Quote: This probably won't happen, but I fantasize about Danny and Jon meeting because the white walkers are attacking and they need the dragons to help them kill them and they end up falling in love. I also hope that Arya reunites with her direwolf and they set out to battle with Robb to kill Joffrey, of course Arya would have to be the one to chop off his head. Quote: Tyrion will start a dwarf colony free of rules and laws.....it will be called Impsterdam. And finally.. Quote: *Jaqen H'ghar is Osha's brother. This is based only on looks. *Jon Snow goes AWOL from The Knight's Watch *Ser Jorah is killed by one of the thirteen in Qarth *King's Landing gets blown up in a wildfire accident/ "terrorist attack" *I have a feeling Lady Stark won't make it out of this season alive *Hodor hodors *Winter eventually comes, shit goes down
