Great episode. A lot of REALLY nerdy discussion that was awesome to listen to. Also, I'm gonna put 10 dollars on Steven having about 65% of the speaking time. He had a lot of great commentary, but man, let someone else talk.

Elite stuff. Why the release delay?

That was a packed weekend of recording. I didn't feel like editing another massive episode after GNO V and then I was busy. Beat the expected release date (mid September).

Yeah, I think I'm going to listen to this one again. This was a BLAH-esque podcast. Enjoyable, but hope for a more balanced conversation next time. Thanks for getting this up Amin.

So far pretty good. It is great to hear theories brought out in conversation.
I like how everyone mentioned and accepted the "GRRM=Greek gods" fact. He does have a story to tell and will make sure that events line up to make that story work. It doesn't matter what Rob did the RW would have always happened because its a great story. I think sometimes we fans forget that GRRM is the puppetmaster and these characters can't make choices that go against the story.

To me, this is something that's simultaneously impossible to overstate and impossible to understate the importance of. On one hand, it means there is no objective reality to discuss, e.g. there is no such thing as a foolish military maneuver or stupid political decision, there is only what GRRM thinks is a stupid decision. I tend to think about this whenever people are discussing Edmure, and whether it was Robb's fault or his that he blocked Tywin, even if 99% of people agree that it wasn't dumb of Edmure, if GRRM thinks it was, then in that world it was dumb. On the other hand, if you're always thinking about this, then there's no point in trying to understand or analyze any in-world decision, since any important decision always exists to serve the plot.

I loved the discussion and I especially enjoyed Steven Attewell's points because he can talk about the books outside of the plot, using political thory, history, etc. which I find much more interesting.

I think about this when I listen to a really in depth podcast or read an essay about asoiaf. On the one hand I love digging deeper and hearing what others have to say. On the other hand we are discussing a world made up by a single dude who can wrath of God* all of the characters or plots (or the way women are treated in Westeros) at any time and all that dialogue may have been for nothing. *mtg reference

'some Glover who has a wooden palisade somewhere on the Stony Shore' made me LOL pretty good. Sasse fought to trot that line out; as well he should have! Then again - IDK, looks pretty fancy, does ol' Deepwood Motte? -

I still had no time to listen - but as a chance I had the stats-file open and just had to jump in to say:
Congratulations AMIN - this is your 100th (aired) episode.

Steven's gotta learn to throw a point out and let other people talk. I think it detracted from what could have been an excellent episode.

this episode was great. steven steamrolled a bit. i will have to listen to it again to come back with nitpicky stuff. but one thing occured to me : is alex speaking german? he and stefan should do a german coop episode. this would be fun (at least for a small group of the fans)

I really didn't pick up on the Stefan Steamroller and enjoyed the episode although it did come off as a bit more like Amin guest hosting on Boiled Leather Audio Hour rather than others guest hosting on APOIAF. I suspect that you probably need two House Manwoody reps on any guest host roundtable to keep the dick jokes flowing.

If so, 3 or 2 should do a VOK episode sometime. Very niche, but according to the tracking stats we seem to have a decent amount of German speaking listeners

Finally was able to finish listening. I think people are being abit too harsh with Vikingkingq. I would hate for him to feel neutered when he guest hosts in the future. Preface to say I am a big fan of The Real Chris. The Real Chris would occasionally steamroll other hosts when he was moderating. Steven was just discussing the topics. I would advise he take a breath now and again but I doubt that Stefan felt he was unable to contribute during the 2 1/2 hour (edited) podcast. One thing that you guys touched on that I have been thinking about a lot lately is what you guys termed Martin's Greek gods and what I have been thinking about as "highly involved deities". The more you look the more I think you can see the fingerprints of the gods in the story. You can say that GRRM just needs to move the story/characters along so that is why things happen the way they do but I think within the story you can observe the divine scaffolding of their interventions just beyond the frame. Anyway really enjoyed the podcast and look forward to future similar episodes!

I thought it was unbalanced but all of the discussion had a point. Conversations are normally like that anyways and as long as the content is good and differant views are brought up (both happened) then it is fine.
Hope to hear more!

I agree, I didn't really notice the steamrolling. Steven needs to break up his conversation into smaller chunks. When you are in podcast with more than 2 people, you should rarely be talking more than 1 minute at one time, and even more rarely 2 minutes. That should be an exceptional case, mainly when setting up a topic, that is it.

Jesus. Listen to Captain Robert's Rules of Order here. Down here we're not total nits, man. We're young wild and free, we smoke weed, we get bitches, and if we feel like taking a five minute departure into a fairly LOL Total War scenario versus the North, well, we feel that that's our prerogative, because we're 'casting from America, not your Godless frozen socialist paradise.

The existence of a 'Part 3' does make me rather keen to find, download and listen to the first two!

A short hand for saying that I think the USP of APOIAF is mixing deep knowledge with humour, and that's what makes its hosts relatable and the show enjoyable after all these years. I think the secret sauce includes both whereas BLAH, which I also enjoy, only has one.
