We plan to record an episode that will be released on the release date, but the recording may happen soon, so get in your questions asap.

Did you guys get advance copies or will this be what we are expecting from the book when it comes out?

Yeah, it's hard to ask specific questions since we aren't lucky enough to get special early editions like you fancy folk. Are you going to have Elio and Linda on the episode, or are you going for a more objective review/ analysis?

I'd be curious to hear the four discuss whether they're truly happy getting this information or whether it'd be cooler to just leave in vague background that you can imagine is something even cooler?

(ETA)What house/character/events were most changed in your estimation by information revealed?

And play the scorpions game with the various maesters who supply the information.

Same question but in regards to Dunk & Egg specifically. Were you happy having so much more information on their futures before their tale has finished? And thoughts on the infamous 'inkblot' on Summerhall?

Will you guys be splitting the content up into multiple themed episodes after your general review on the 28th? You could each pick a section to specialise in and lead the discussion. I imagine Amin on Dorne to be a particular highlight.

I wasn't going to say anything but I got a chance to flick through the book on Thursday @ Harper Collins. I thought I was streets ahead! :-(

Has all the extra info from the book, and getting it as a history with some distance from the people it talks about (as opposed to ice and fire), changed your guys' opinions on any of the characters we've come to know from the novellas and even the older generations from Ice and Fire (Tywin, Aerys, Rickard etc)?

Will you guys write a non-spoiler review before release?

Elio tweeted something almost a year ago about the book "confirming a long held theory." What is it?!

What's the biggest shocker you've encountered, and what is the biggest letdown? Weirdest thing?

Any info on Sothoryos or the mystery Ulthos continent that first appeared in the map collection?

Is there an entire chapter dedicated to the myth and legend of Tormund's giant member?

How many times does the word "bear" appear in the Mormont family tree?

Hodor?

Dammit I missed this thread. Will anyone of the hosts be featured in another podcast on TWOIAF? Maybe in BLAH as guest host? Or VoK?

I just need more TWOIAF discussion. Just listened to one of the old episodes (the first time with Elio and Linda) and found out you guys already talked about TWOIAF I almost dropped my plate :|

I was going to complain about how long it was going to be until this episode was released, but then I realized I was in an A Song of Ice and Fire-focused forum and was thankful I hadn't given myself a terminal dose of irony by posting that.

Were Kyle and Ashley able to get copies? Are they in the ep?

Unfortunately no and no. Mimi couldn't make it at the last moment, I believe she was food sick , so it is just me flipping through the book with Elio and Linda and chatting about different pages, after some introductory questions. It should highlight some of the big reveals in the book and provide some discussion useful for when receiving the first batch of shipments that day/week.

Cool cool.

Now the episode has been recorded, will this thread's questions be used for subsequent episodes with the whole crew? Or can we ask you True or False questions? ;-)

I'd also like to know your reading orders. Did you all go cover to cover? Or did you pick your sections in a specific order? I'm personally going straight to the Family Trees, Summerhall/End of Aegon V section and then I'm going to try cover to cover!

Also, ranking the artwork. Picking your Top 3-5 pieces.

You can now use this thread for submitting questions for the subsequent episodes we'll do on it.

Apparently my cheapness is a thing that will get me in trouble, Amazon says I won't be getting mine until Nov. 2 to 7, it says. Hmm, not sure what I think about the concept of spoilers in a fake history book.

The way I look at it is that if you're already getting it cheap from Amazon thanks to their lowest price guarantee, you might as well spend a little more on shipping and get it delivered on the release date. Some how I lucked into a price of $22 since I put my preorder in, so 2-day shipping suddenly doesn't feel so expensive.

Someone on Westeros was able to buy a copy today at Target in the US. According to their computers, October 19th is the release date so they can sell it.

Not sure if there'll be portraits in this thing, but... Of the people depicted, who best fits your personal mental image of them? Who looks absolutely nothing like what you'd imagined?

Has going through the books opened up any doors to new crackpot theories? The more far-fetched, the better.

What were your feelings about "confirmation" of certain theories in the Year of the False Spring/Tourney @ Harrenhal section.

For me the closer we get to the relevant events the less happy I am with out of books information.

What were some of the big surprise/holy shit reveals?

For me the Five Forts and the universal nature of the Azor Ahai legend.

Is all of the art considered canon?

What do you think about the still mysterious Summerhall?
Which parts do you think that should/might be fleshed out by George in his Fire & Blood/GRRMarillion book?
Which artist(s) is your favorite?
George was very thorough and demanding on some of the artworks. What do you think about the artworks that portrays people who looked different in the show, like Dany or things/places such as the super creepy yet much more majestic Iron Throne?
Which chapter is the most boring? and the one you could read over and over again?
Did you get excited when reading the water wizards? (I know I was - I hope some Dornish people or any Rhoynish descendants still have that capability ;p)
So many stories, people, civilizations, wars and so on. If George finally finished ASOIAF, which story would you like him to develop based on this book? The Turtle Wars? Yi Ti? Sea Snake's adventures?

Need your questions for the first part of the book (ancient history up to right before Aegon's conquest) submitted here by Thursday 5pm eastern time.

i dunno if this is so much a question as it is a comment, but i was really surprised at how many southern houses actually descend from first men families. i was always under the impression that other htan the north, westeros was made up primarily of andal family house names after the andals overthrew the first men.

from twoiaf it appears that the lannisters, the royce's from the vale, the yronwoods, the blackwoods, the brackens, and many other southern houses that exist today were actually there in westeros long before the andals arrived. so wouldnt it be fair to many of these southern houses to claim to descend from the first men as well? doesnt that make the notherners' descent from the first men less special? why don't the lannisters ever brag about descending from the first men? i guess i just dont see how its all that special anymore seeing as how so many southern lords could make the same claim. maybe the northerners have maintained first men customs better than southerners, but they are certainly no unique in their descent from the first men.

am i missing something?

:o I didn't realize that you were having the History of Westeros hosts on the show. That would have been the perfect time to pitch a theory I have about House Manwoody's origins to see what they thought. I already posted this theory on the forums as part of my pro-Bloodraven campaign during the Westeros World Cup, so I didn't think to ask the usual podcast hosts. The History of Westeros podcasters are the ultimate experts in weirwood lore, and the etymological origins of house names would fall under the category of ancient history so this would have been the perfect opportunity to bring it up.

Here is the original quote from the Westeros World Cup thread:
uflGator1 wrote:
As a man who is now part tree, how could he not be House Manwoody's champion??? Afterall, I've been convinced for a long time that House Manwoody is named after weirwoods. 'Wer' is an Old English word that means "a male being, man, husband, hero" (ie. werewolf="manwolf", wergeld='manprice", etc) and 'wood' = 'woody'. Bloodraven practically is a weirwood at this point, which makes him a Manwoody too!

And if that doesn't give him enough Manwoody cred, then just remember this: He banged Shiera Seastar.

Basically my point is that the name Manwoody may derive from their worship of the Old Gods. Kingsgrave is in the Stony Dornish region, so the blood of the first men runs strong there.

As further evidence of this theory (although admittedly somewhat indirect and slightly tedious), GRRM seems to be aware of the concept of wergeld because he references it in The Sworn Sword. Wergeld ("man gold") was the price in gold that you had to pay a house if you killed or maimed someone that belonged to them. It was only practiced in the Early Middle Ages and was considered ancient and barbaric by the time of the High or Late Middle Ages, which is why Lady Rohanne scoffs when old Ser Useless tries to revitalize the practice of paying a blood price. It makes sense to me that GRRM would use the root word 'wer' to name something ancient and mythical, knowing that it meant 'man', so when he created House Manwoody he would have had that connection in mind already.

My timing is bad, but mayhaps you can ask them what they think if you have them on again when you cover Dorne. Elio and Linda may have thoughts on it too, although, obviously, George himself is the only one who really knows where he got the name.
