Good episode guys.. and Mimi.

Gotta say that I completely agree with Mimi's point about the length of anticipation affecting people's view of the book itself. I too read the series when Crows was already out and so I enjoyed the book quite a bit and didn't feel let down by it at all. For dance I didn't have to wait too long (2 years) but I can see how it definitely affected my desire for it to fit into my personal expectations. However, I also agree with Kyle that while this book did have some minor faults, I was totally pleased with it overall and I think my appreciation of it will grow even more over time, especially once future books are released and it has a more proper context.

Also, is this the chick that Kyle and Amin were talking about in the outakes? If so, yes, you should totally have her on.

If we are voting, I vote no.
Nedopak was ok just for the voice acting/killer lawnmower(or was it a vacuum cleaner?) but I prefer guests that actually bring something to the table otherwise they end up being less than great episodes.

Overall good episode, maybe a little bit short.

I have to say, that I didn't want to insult Elio with my topic-title. At that time there was another topic with a very similar title: viewtopic.php?f=4&t=646 and I just used the wording from there :)

Can someone help me - what was the idea behind the blood oranges?

Regarding guest hosts: I like them all (Especially Larry, Elio, Linda, the TotH guys, the WiC guys) - but I also like the episodes with "only" you all as hosts.

#3 Doran Martell cannot have crazy Dornish sex because of the gout so he eats lots of blood oranges so his paramour/Hotah can enjoy his sperm. That is what I got out of it at least...

Always the problem with Podcasts (and radio):
Even if she - mayhaps - be in an episode, we won't see her...

@FTWard: THX for clarification, I must have suppressed that one.

Another good episode!

Some one get on that editing job, so we can have more frequent podcasts! I just finihsed reading the series in October, so I crave hearing people talk about it(I've listened to all the podcast since then), since I can't seem to get anyone else to read the damn books. :) Now I will just have to wait for the series on DVD, as I have not seen a blip from it yet, though I have looked up all the actors, and I listened to the podcasts about the episodes....just haven't seen any live action from it yet.

Post subject:  Re: Episode 65

Hey - since I'm very slowly getting close to commenting on the current podcasts, I may bump the occasional thread about recent-ish (okay, that may be a stretch) episodes if the hosts discuss a topic I'm compelled to comment on.

In this episode - Mimi, Amin and Kyle talk about the show "lapping" the books, i,e, catching up to the events of the books, and then continuing the story in its own direction instead of adapting the books or relying on the books for inspiration.

For this to unfold, let's talk about some specifics of the timeline.

1) - ACoK is being split across two seasons by all accounts.
- I have not heard about AFfC or ADwD being similarly split, but it's not inconceivable - especially if the show is trying to allow the books sufficient time to finish. For scenario one (Sc1), let's assume that they are not split. For scenario two (Sc2), let's assume they're both split.
- Last I've seen, George is done about 200 pages of TWoW. This is based on a story from March of 2012, I don't know if there are more current figures.

So for the TV show timeline, things would unfold like this for Sc1 and Sc2.

2013 - Season 3, ASoS Part 1 (Sc1 and Sc2)
2014 - Season 4, ASoS Part 2 (Sc1 and Sc2)
2015 - Season 5, AFfC (Sc1), AFfC Part 1 (Sc2)
2016 - Season 6, ADwD (Sc1), AFfC Part 2 (Sc2)
2017 - Season 7, ADwD Part 1 (Sc2)
2018 - Season 8, ADwD Part 2 (Sc2)

So this kind of consideration about what the show will do is a question that needs to be addressed sometime around 2016-2018, when production for future seasons need to be considered.

2) Given that timeline, are the hosts on the right track when they seriously call into question whether the series will still be a big deal or cost-effective by then? Get our your magic eight ball, or stare into the fires of R'Hllor and see if you're more talented than Melisandre. The show gets critical acclaim, is winning awards, and is drawing an ever larger audience (Season 1 averaged ~2.5M viewers [premiered at 2.2M, finale at 3.0M], and Season 2 averaged ~3.8M [premiered at 3.8M, finale at ~4.0M). The series is setting records for HBO in terms of DVD/Blu-ray sales as well as digital sales.

I have no idea if this kind of positive trajectory will continue, but it seems safe to say that the show hasn't yet peaked or reached critical mass at least.

3) How quick will George get the last two books done? Given the pressure/momentum of the series, he might have more of a vested interest in finishing the books before the series laps them.

It's conceivable that The Winds of Winter (TWoW) could be done in 2015 or 2016, which would put A Dream of Spring (ADoS) around 2020 or 2021, even following a conservative timeline. 2015 and 2018 could be realistic timelines that would allow the show to continue to adapt the books, especially if George is working closely with the show's producers when it comes to resolutions and major plot arcs for ADoS. Can George be finished with the series and its last two books by 2018? If not, then the series will have to make the creative choice about going on a hiatus, slowing down the adaptation, or forging ahead with its own story.

4) Will HBO continue this series into 6, 8, or 10 seasons? This would be around 60-100 episodes. Similar critically acclaimed shows with rabid fanbases have concluded or are approaching similar timelines (i.e. Dexter at 8 seasons or ~100 episodes, Sopranos at 6 seasons or 86 episodes, Mad Men at ~7 seasons or ~ 90 episodes, or (this is stretching it) Lost at 6 seasons and 120 episodes), so the time and resource commitment is not unheard of. Given the show's success to date, I can imagine that HBO has had at least preliminary discussions with the creative people, producers of the show, and George himself that have explored whether there will be a commitment to see the series through to its creative conclusion or not.

Given these considerations, I really think at this point, and with all other things remaining equal, the most likely outcome would be that the show will continue to adapt the books through to their conclusion. This would have the show lasting between 8-10 seasons, at around 80-100 episodes, and conclude around 2018-2022 depending on the need for a hiatus. This would give George the next 6-8 years to deliver the next two books, which seems like an optimistic but not unrealistic timeframe.

Ready to see a 25 year old Maisie Williams as Arya? Stay tuned.

Well it better not try to go 10 seasons because it is not going there. The actors are not going to stick around for 10 seasons. I think some will go and try to 'start their movie careers' like actors always do from tv shows (even HBO) to movies. And most will fail and in retrospective will wish that they had stayed with the show until the end.

Good post though and no problem about bumping up old topics. The threads are up for discussion of each episode and people will listen to them at different times

63 was awesome - the enthusiasm and sheer knowledge was amazing, to the point I was questioning whether I had read the same book as the panel. ;) I think I want to get through the podcast backlog and then start my re-reads in prep for season 3 - perhaps I will start participating on the ACoK re-read forum too.

In the meantime, I lurk here and there.

Also, when you say "it's not going there" re: 10 seasons, what's the alternative? They're simply going to pull the plug midway and say "Eh, close enough"? You make a good point about the actors, especially the principle POV ones (Dinklage, Clarke, Heady, Allen, etc.) we know are around post ADwD. But I think studios are being a little more conscious of locking up casts in these kind of productions - ex. Sam Jackson signed up to be Nick Fury in the Marvel movie universe for 10 pictures, or something like that. Without knowing the nitty gritty details of the contracts, though, it's all speculative.

Please do bump old episode threads. I can't promise I remember everything we talked about or said, but the forum is here for you listeners to share your thoughts so bump away!

Oh boy I just can't see the show running for 10 season. There are just too many moving parts. I think that as soon as the show peaks and ratings start taking any sort of dip the higher ups will start talking about how to end it. The show is too expensive.

I agree with Amin. The actors won't stick around for 10 years. Especially those who are off shooting on location. Shooting 10 years on a weather controlled sound stage is one thing, but spending ten years "up north" or "across the narrow sea"? Oh boy that's just tough. Tough physically and tough emotionally, being away from friends, family, and the life you've built.

Whenever I think about how long the show will run I'm reminded of something that either Benioff or Weiss (I can't recall) said a couple Comic-con's ago. I don't have the quote, but I'm sure you can find the youtube video. He mentioned that as long as they get to the red wedding then the show can end and he will be happy they pulled it off.

It is my belief that the show will have an abrupt unfinished ending.

Very interesting, I hadn't heard or read that (being a n00b and all). Sounds like if they get 4 seasons in, the current producers will feel like they've unlocked the accomplishment at least. Which kind of surprises me a little.

Should things really slow down pace wise in an attempt to stretch out the series to a 10th season, I imagine the show would inevitably split things geographically like George did in the books. Which could give some of the actors a lot of down time for family, other projects or what have you. And even without a geographic split, the resulting content stretched over 10 seasons would lead to greatly reduced shooting schedule for most of the principles, I would think.

I'm daring to dream! ;)

And thanks for honoring me with your 1,000th post!
