Post subject:  Getting to know our hosts a little more.....

i figured this thread might be a good one for fans who might have direct questions for our hosts. after seventy some odd episodes its easy to feel like we know our hosts' personalities very well, but through the episodes ive come to see that they rarely talk in specifics about their lives. of course without coming off as a creepy stalker i figured starting a thread in which podcast fans can ask direct questions to our hosts to get to know them more would be most appropriate. and as the hosts read through the questions, they can pick and choose which ones they feel comfortable replying to.

i'll get us started:

-Mimi: how does a mongolian american immigrant end up in dallas texas? such a random place, i assume u ended up there based on your parents' job? do u have plans to leave the area? are you happy in texas? I am a physician currently working in philadelphia, and i noticed u make reference to working in a colorectal surgery clinic? what is it specifically that you do? are you a nurse? phys. assistant? doctor? in the battle for asian barbeque supremacy what would you take, korean bbq or mongolian bbq? ok stupid question, but since im korean, im curious to see how my people's cuisine would stack up vs yours in your mind

-amin: waht is it u do for a living? i dont think it was ever mentioned yet. how did you like the guys from the boiled leather podcast, would u ever have shawn t collins as a guest on our apoiaf?

-kyle: how has your acting career in la been going? there have been many mentions of some of your roles in various movies. which of them have been most fun for you? any other career aspirations besides acting? how about producing or directing?

-ashley: could you give us a rundown of all of your piercings and wigs? is there a unique story behind them? how many of each do you have?

looking forward to hearing from you all, it may sound silly, but u guys are pseudo celebrities to me, its impossible not to feel that way after hours and hours of hearing your conversations. by the way im very happy with the hosts as it stands now, you 4 make a great nucleus and i think u have the best chemistry of all the hosts both current and past.

thanks!

I actually have guest hosted with boiled leather a few times. (http://www.towerofthehand.com/search/?q ... er&x=8&y=6)

Sean and Stefan are good guys, Stefan was on Guys Night Out V4. Sean would do well as a guest host, perhaps when we get back into our chapter reread. I do like the fact that we can guest host with other podcasts as an alternative sometimes - it makes scheduling easier.

haha, my life is an open book. i think i talk about myself on a personal level more so than anyone else on the podcast because sometimes i forget we're doing this for publication, and feel like i'm just chatting with good friends.

kansas first, actually. we came to america so that my dad could work on his phd in anthropology. but somehow that turned into a master's in computer science, and then we moved to dallas/ft worth for his job.

no concrete plans to leave, although i'd love to go back to inner mongolia and live there for a while.

good to know physicians also have a sense of frat boy humor, haha. i'm the office manager. i manage HR, payroll, and the facility financials. my job is better suited to someone with an MBA, not someone who's working on an MS in biotech, but i work for a group of physicians i really respect and i'm pretty grateful just to have a job that puts me through grad school.

are you a general practitioner or a specialist?

mongolian bbq isn't a real thing. it's a chinese take on stir-fry invented in taiwan. so i think korean bbq takes the crown on that one. i actually prefer korean cuisine to mongolian. i don't eat lamb, and i'm always down for a good dolsot bibimbap.

specialist, im currently training in rehab medicine, the full specialty title is physical medicine and rehabilitation, and have plans to train in a subspecialty of PM&R called cancer rehabilitation. yeah, docs can def. have frat boy humor, esp. the kind of docs you work with, those colorectal surgeons..hmm what do i remember from medschool from those guys, classic quotes like 'the money is in the shit', or 'get your hand out of those bowels, bowels are not your friends', or after staring at a huge layer of fat on a woman receiving a bowel resection in the OR 'thats a corn fed american woman right there'.

i had no idea mongolian bbq wasnt a real thing. go figure. i always found mongolian korean relations to be very interesting. korea obviously has a history of oppression from its asian neighbors, but somehow korean people tend to view mongolians with a sense of respect more than anything else. i think its because although mongolia did conquer korea for a bit, there was never an attempt to wipe out korean culture like there was from the japanese. i showed my parents the 'the rise of khan' movie and they were super excited to see it and learn about gengis khan. did you know almost all korean babies are born with these bruise like pigmentations on our legs buttocks and back. and we call them 'mongolian spots'. i guess mongolian blood is kind of like targaryan blood, everyone is quick to point out they have a drop. so when mongolian babies are born do they have those bruise spots as well?

another random mongolian question, obviously mongolian cuisine is very dairy based, which sets it apart from all the other far east cuisines, which have almost no dairy at all. so does this mean that mongolians tend not to be lactose intolerant like the rest of far east asia?

I find I don't talk about myself very often in any type of situation. So I'm probably in the middle of the pack as far as what I'll divulge and what I'll keep hidden.

Acting in LA is a beast. You've got to work your ass off to make a dent. The competition is fierce, but that's half the fun.

Things have been good. Several months back I had my first speaking part on television. I had one word (gotta start somewhere right?) on ABC's Happy Endings. The episode was titled The Code War if you want to look it up. It was all very exciting.

When I first moved out here there were two main acting unions. SAG and AFTRA. AFTRA was easier to get into so I joined that and continued to work hard to get into SAG. I earned my eligibility and was saving up the money to join, when just over a week ago the two unions merged. I was grandfathered into the new SAG-AFTRA union. Another big step in my career. Things are crazy right now due to the merge, but like any change there are growing pains.

Now it's time to find an agent and work my butt off.

I do a lot of background work right now. Every set brings a new adventure. I have to say that working on the movie Burlesque is a stand out experience. I got to chat with Alan Cumming and a couple nights a week for 3 months I got paid to sit in a bar drinking beer and watch beautiful half naked women dance.

I have too many fun background stories to tell here.

Acting has always been my dream in this business. The more I'm on set the more I see other jobs that I would like to try. Stunts and directing to name a couple, but right now acting gets all of my attention.

I'm not too familiar although I have been to a few different Korean bbq joints and plan on going to many more. It's funny when I talk to people from out of town and explain Korean bbq. They usually say "You have to pay to cook your own food? That sounds terrible." Hahaha. I can't help but laugh.

I just got back from Korea and I already miss bibimbap so bad. Plus, duck on a Korean bbq...heaven. Martin needs to add some of that in TWOW.

You can't walk a block in LA without running into a billboard or poster for Game of Thrones. So it that regard yes it gets a lot of love in LA. As far as people wanting to be part of it. Well I dont hear very much talk about that. I think because it films across the pond everyone out here has things closer to home to concern themselves with. Everyone I talk to loves it though.

Here's a question for all of you!

We all know you like to podcast (because it's been around so long!) but there has to have been at least one thing that has made you want to quit, throw a keyboard, push a small child's face into a fireplace, etc. So, what is the worst podcast experience you've had so far, if you've had one?

Post subject:  Re: Getting to know our hosts a little more.....

to be totally honest, the only thing that's ever made me want to quit is the negative feedback. and not, you know, the constructive feedback offered by listeners who care about the quality of show (i'm looking at you, apocalypse dan. wuv you.) and not so much the funny stuff either (SUP CIRCLE OF SPITE).

but you know, the ones that accuse us of not being into the source material, not liking the series. the ones that complain we're annoying and terrible and will hopefully be off the air. it used to make me sad that something we poured so much heart into was often misunderstood. and i ended up feeling like i owed these listeners a personal favor and failed them. at one point i remember reading some vicious critiques and thinking, "why the fuck do i even do this?"

not so much anymore. we have the best damn listeners imaginable, and the most awesome community. part of me almost feels like every host could quit, and there would still be an APOIAF as long as you manwoodies are around to take up the banner. so these days i'm all:
