Hi,

haven't heard it, but thanks nonetheless.
I have to admit: '69' is sweet for a GNO.

And thanks again for the rapid-editing, whoever owns the praise for that.

Comments from me later - have to listen first.

I especially liked the dramatic readings at the beginning and was hoping for an epic bit somewhere in the episode. (Amin as Oberyn and Elio as Shagga!)

Shame about Fabio(sp?), I thought the best part was the discussion of S2 and he was sorely missed there.

Hi again,
I now had time to hear the epsiode - first: I liked it very much. Good discussions, great guests.

One technical thing: Alex seems to use a microphone and his speakers - not a headset. He always sounds "far" away (in comparison to all others). That's a little bit strange.

Regarding your topic if prophecies have to come true and that whole part of your talk I found a quote from Marwin the Mage
Grandmaester Marwin - The Mage wrote:
“Not that I would trust it. Gorghan of Old Ghis once wrote that a prophecy is like a treacherous woman. She takes your member in her mouth, and you moan with the pleasure of it and think, how sweet, how fine, how good this is . . . and then her teeth snap shut and your moans turn to screams. That is the nature of prophecy, said Gorghan. Prophecy will bite your prick off every time.”

For me that is a GRRM directly adressing us - the readers. Everytime we think we are right, GRRM's joy in not fulfilling expectations will bring him to turn the most likely down. And I think that you all had a good point with the prophecy Cersei is always thinking of - it really seems to clear. And I can see Myrcella survive - maybe only Cersei (like Catelyn) thinks she's dead when they get her off the cliff (or crossbowed).

I wonder how Tyrion would get the Eyre down - maybe it has something to do with his former work in Casterly Rock. There he had the task of managing and keeping care of the wells if I remember correctly. Poisoning the water wells?

You mention Roose and why he allowed Ramsay's cruelness. I think that is simply the same reason Tywin had Lorch and Clegane. As he somewhere puts it: "You need some monsters to do your dirty work..."

I had a thought about this:

Doesn't Myrcella have a cousin that they use as a body double? What if, for example, Cersei sees this ship carrying 'fake Myrcella' sink...and when they find the bodies they are too bloated to tell, and she thinks her daughter is dead?

There has to be a good reason why Myrcella has a cousin that's a bodydouble with her, and it's been introduced early enough that I wouldn't feel cheated if the prophecy was fufilled via this method.

Then it gives Myrcella a reason to be the 'valonquar' that comes back and strangle Cersei? not a dead certainty, but possible. :)

So... "Catelyn needs a man to keep her in line"? Um... Wow. Wrong on way too many levels to mention right now.

On another note, Amin already has a cameo (http://bit.ly/w4xG6G) in the series 8-)

Summing up the Catelyn discussion with Dan's initial line is wrong on one level and can be mentioned now ;)

Mmmm, I felt it was an accurate summation of Dan's point of view on the matter. I did appreciate Alex's comments, though.

I'm glad my Jon Connington theory got some love. Nobody responded to the original topic (which I thought was pretty decent), and I was feeling neglected.

I agree with that. The way I read your post initially (with the "so") implied to me that you were saying that was the end result of that discussion rather than a single person's view. I know I was being too sensitive interpreting it that way and it probably has to due with a lot of fire the podcast has faced recently.

Dan certainly does not like Catelyn, which he made clear in the last Guys Night Out as well. The rest of the guys disagreed with him in both instances, but that is his view.

As for the actual line, I don't want to put words in his mouth, but my interpretation was related to what he said immediately afterwards - 'that Catelyn is why some people think George is misogynistic - creating a character that constantly blunders and makes it seem that she needs a man to direct or correct her' [a character with a misogynistic subtext, like stereotypical and sexist or racist characters of TV past]. We then disagreed with him on two points - first noting that there are plenty of male characters who have made a lot of mistakes and second, many of Catelyn's so called blunders aren't really that bad, can be defended, or even praised (as Elio did in the last Guys Night Out for Catelyn indirectly leading Jon to go to the Wall, which would have been in a far worse state without him there).

There is plenty of questionable content in our Guys Night Out like the objectification of female characters which was the overarching discussion that included the serious chat about Catelyn. At least our girls will do it for the guys as well, so it is an equal, Kantian style objectification. And isn't that what people want to hear, even if it is not the most appropriate thing

Thanks for the thoughtful response, Amin. I do enjoy the GNOs generally, and I liked much of the discussion in this go-round as well. What I objected to was the blanket-ness of Dan's comments regarding Catelyn's intelligence, and specifically the implication (well... bold-faced statement) that her faults can only be contained by a male hand keeping her in her proper place. Both as a reader analyzing the text and as a girl, I found that view insulting and erroneous. While I don't know if GRRM is as accurate a lens into the female psyche as he (perhaps) thinks he is, I certainly do not think that the books are misogynist, and I consider Cat to be a very touching example of the awful impact which tragedy-- especially compounded tragedy-- can have on a person.

I also won't lie and say that I particularly enjoy the Fuck/Marry/Murder section, but it's your podcast, of course, and I understand that it's a game played at least partly in the spirit of facetiousness. The game has occasionally led to some interesting discussion on female characters, so I don't think it's entirely without merit, anyway. Hopefully the same will be true of future LNOs.

By the way, the "Heir to the Iron Islands" theory is interesting, but I was surprised that no one has mentioned the possibility that Asha might (also?) be adding another squidlet of questionable legitimacy to the Greyjoy family tree, courtesy of Qarl the Maid. Asha didn't have time to brew that moon tea, after all...

Yes that is a good point - it did cross my mind during my recent reread. In relation to the moon tea, Asha even briefly mused that having a Greyjoy child might not be a bad idea, with all that has happened to her family. Unfortunately as you said the other parent in both scenarios is of questionable blood from the Ironborn perspective, but perhaps the full parentage can be hidden or glossed over.

I don't remember-- have we ever had a good indication as to how the Ironborn feel about bastards? (Do they even have a generic surname for illegitimate children?) Regardless, what I think might be a bigger problem for a child of Asha's is that my impression is that Asha doesn't seem to be particularly well-liked among most of her people (or men, anyway) to begin with. She's too reasonable, to willing to poke holes in the dreams of conquest and violence that most Ironborn consider so awesome. The last kingsmoot, at least, made it seem like these people are definitely values-voters, so they might dismiss the kid based not on illegitimacy but on its mother's history of attempted reform of their culture.

THe generic surname of bastards on the Iron Islands is Pyke. Cotter Pyke, commander of Eastwatch-by-the-Sea therefore has to be some illegimate son of somebody.

Thanks brynden. So after ADWD, Cotter is a poor bastard both figuratively and literally ;)

I enjoy him too, I'm just afraid that the next time we see him it'll be in a PIRATES OF THE CARIBBEAN-esqe subaquatic march of Others. (Hey, at least he likes the sea ;))

Since I bothered to join the forums, I might as well post some comments.

I don't like the use of the word "theory" for the Heir to the Iron Islands thing. Its not a theory. There's nothing secret of subtextual about it. Sometimes when men and women have sex, they make babies! Its a (very real) possibility, not a theory.

It is a theory because we do not know if she got pregnant or not. Amin's theory is that she did get pregnant and it could eventually be relevant to the story. The definition of theory according to dictionary.com: a proposed explanation whose status is still conjectural and subject to experimentation, in contrast to well-established propositions that are regarded as reporting matters of actual fact. Seems to fit the definition of theory to me.
