Hello everyone!
I just started listening to the podcast a few weeks back when I switched back to an iPhone after a few year layoff. After catching up with this season's recaps, I wanted more, so I decided to go back and download the season one recaps.
I just finished the season one recaps, and before I start season two, I have one thing I want to say: I really, really hope I don't have to listen to Larry Williams, AKA Otaku Assemble, guest host ever again.
He was OK in his first appearance on season one, but his schtick got really old really fast. He offered nothing analysis wise to the episodes. All he did was cuss and yell and try to be funny. I was looking forward to having a viewer on the podcast that wasn't familiar with the books. I wanted to hear what they thought about the show IN DEPTH. But Larry just complains and cusses. When asked to make predictions for future episodes, he scoffed. Unfortunately, Kyle seemed to get a kick out of him, but I cringed at everything he said. He was especially bad in the season one finale episode. The other guest house (Mimi's "friend"...i think it was Lance?) was excellent and provided a LOT of depth.
I'm glad he hasnt been around for the season three reviews. Hopefully it stays that way. I have my fingers crossed he'll stay out of season two.
But invite Wes back anytime!
also, nice to meet you all!

Welcome new listener! Way to go with making a thread as your first post I do like Larry though! I think he's fun, as long as there's plenty of aftershow. I'm kind of hoping he's on the next episode, i want to hear him react to the RW!

Hello coos - great to have you here.
Larry is in 2 episodes of the S2 recaps. And to say it in a neutral way: The community here is quite divided on Larry being on the show. I'm also not a very big fan of him - on the other hand do his appearances always make controversial discussions here and in the main-page-comments. That breaks the circle-jerk and pushes everybody a little out of his/her comfort-zone.

Well I looked at his Youtube channel and I don't think he's been watching GoT this season. I would like to hear is RW reaction, but only for a couple minutes.
Anyways, glad to be aboard.

he has been making reviews, he just hasn't got them organized on his channels page to show up. If we do have him on again, it won't be during the recap but as a mini segment to get his opinion since we don't want to force a spoiler free show on you guys.

I don't mind him. His reaction video to Ned's death is still hilarious. I also think that, for a viewer, he has a very solid grasp of the plot and world. Having said that, his podcast appearance for Blackwater was pretty awkward. I remember he kept cutting people off and yelling, and just generally trying to shove his opinions down others' throats. At one point he even went on a rant about how people are jealous of his internet fame. So yeah, I'd be happy for him to have a segment where he gives his thoughts, but having him colonize an entire episode with his screaming might get a little old. He may have matured a bit since then, though.

Try not to sugercoat what you really feel guys Having edited that monster Blackwater episode, I'm not sure how you remember the episode in that particular way. Scheduling in general has been a pain for the hosts this season, which explains the lack of any scheduled guests. I like Larry and the plan was to have him on sometime as part of an episode if it is during season 3 air time, not the full one, to avoid the spoiler issue that Ashley mentioned. Looks like that will probably be after the season if it happens and fits our schedules.

I never sugarcoat what I feel about the episodes I was OK with him until Blackwater - I also experienced it in a similar way like Valkyrist - just look my comments on that episode up. I only did not wanted to start that whole discussion (again).

I love Larry's enthusiasm and I always enjoy his contributions. He's rarely ever a part of the show and I think if you really detest him he is easily avoidable.
Love the Gleeson pic btw.

I like Larry when he does his own GOT reviews but I feel that when he applies the anime-logic to the more rounded and complex characters in ASOIAF it comes off as a simplistic way of interpreting someone's actions and reactions. despite the fact that you guys told him about what Sansa's going through he expects her to be proactive when we know that in real life people don't always get over dramas in their lives and especially considering her situation it's a miracle she's not been cut to pieces by Joffrey in the books and that's got to tell him something about the character, no? Nope, he just thinks she's whiny and should get over herself, whilst ignoring the fact that she does not know what we viewers know. I would agree that an older character would have to come to these realizations quicker and should but she's just a teenager who's had a very rough life and who was forced to adjust and who did not want to lose her belief in something greater and nobler and that's what I admire but Larry doesn't even consider these aspects. When he essentially dissed the whole Tywin-Tyrion relationship and said it was bad character development because Tywin hadn't changed his position regarding Tyrion I was tempted to never watch his reviews again because it's frustrating to see someone not understand that character development does not mean everyone gets to like each other more and more as the story progresses (sometimes it can mean the opposite even or sometimes nothing changes at all and a character suddenly realised this) and yeah there are points where two of your favourite characters will disagree on something or hate each other when they seem to like everybody else. His gut-feeling reactions to things became quite tiresome after a while because they lacked the sophistication and subtlety of your guys' in-depth discussions and they just paled in comparison it's sad to say. After he said he was essentially going to quit mentioning Theon I was really pissed because he does not seem to understand that in real life there are situations you cannot escape from and then yeah you're basically stuck. That does not mean that your life will not continue. When you're a priosoner you're not going anywhere anytime soon but he apparently expected him to bust out of the Dreadfort with a kamehameha or something? He didn't get that the bleakness and hopelessness of the whole situation was the point of all those scenes and he would not notice that because he's seemingly not looking at the ASOIAF world in those terms. ......but apart from all this I quite like the guy .

His perspective would be better on the Game of Owns podcast than a book based one like this.

I vote yes on Larry. I dig his enthusiasm and the radically different perspective on the show is nice to hear. I probably wouldn't listen to 111 episodes of Larry, but he's cool for a change. The/A Podcast of Ice and Fire doesn't have to be any one thing, it's everything from the dryest nerdery, to dick jokes and many other things. The official podcast of the Many-Faced God, wearing a feathered hat, eating a blood orange and hearing about how Mimi's dad is totally Tywin.
