Episode 37: Interviewing Westeros
Episode 37 for the week of January 30th, in which we seem like almost respectable podcasters in our interview with Elio M. Garcรญa (aka Ran) and Linda Antonsson, otherwise known as the force behind Westeros. Elio and Linda discuss working with GRRM, running the ASOIAF forums, and how the series has brought them together. With their expertise, we also review chapters 62 and 63 of A Game of Thrones. And Kyle showcases his awesome battle cry.

Thank you again for the invitation to appear on your podcast! It was a new experience for us, and a fun one. ๐

Great job guys! It was interesting to hear how Westeros began and some of the challenges Elio & Linda have had in running it. As a fellow fan site owner, I love hearing about that kinda stuff.
Also, I feel hurt and betrayed that you don’t consider me the first “important A Song of Ice and Fire fan person” to appear on your podcast though.
Ok, not really. ๐
Keep up the good work guys!

immediately after i made the comment, i remembered our interview with you (and how delighted we were at that time, to sound quasi-professional as well!). but by then it was too late to backtrack. and then i thought to myself, phil probably hates us and won’t listen to this episode anyway.
proved me wrong!
in all seriousness though, not only were you our legit first fansite interview, you were also responsible for the episode that kicked our lazy asses out of hiatus. and we’re going to be pestering you for another interview when the series airs.

Haha! No worries. Was glad to be on and would love to do it again some time.
And I’m glad to hear I helped motivate you to get back on the horse. If only I had the same power over GRRM…

Wow. You guys were like all professional and stuff for this… it was weird. And why does Chase hate being professional? Or does he hate Swedes? ๐

Take a gander to your right. Suit and tie = professional.

Yeah, excellent episode, although I missed Chase too.
I write in defense of the Dothraki. It’s not that they are not “barbarians,” it’s just that they aren’t any more barbaric then the so-called nobles of Westeros. Don’t the Westerosi lords also condone rape at the end of a battle? Furthermore, isn’t it the right of a Westerosi (say, Gregor) to rape any woman who is beneath his social station? Furthermore, isn’t it the right of a Westerosi noble to pay someone (say, Sandor) to kill a commoner for any reason or no reason?
I don’t think the aftermath of a Westerosi battle is any better than the aftermath of a Dothroaki battle. The only thing that keeps Westerosi knights in line is dragons.

I think the differnce is that in Westeros culture the raping is frowned upon and discouraged by most of the “nobles” even though everyone knows it happens, but in Dothraki culture it is openly accepted. That being said, I agree that in this regard Westeros is not any better than the Dothraki.

I just subscribed to your podcast and this was the first one I listened to. Very nice! A couple questions:
1. In the chapter re-reads, if a listener wants to reread the same chapters, should we just assume you’ll do two per podcast?
2. You mentioned a twitter account but I didn’t catch what it was. What was it?

as far as the chapter re-reads go, we’re aiming for two per episode. we started out with five, scaled down to one, and now we’re finding out that two is a good fit for us, and will allow us to finish out the book before the premiere of the tv series.

Not on hiatus again, are you? I need to get my fix of ASOIAF until the show comes out!
