Episode 46: Delicious Lemoncakes

Episode 46 for the week of April 10th, in which we bring you a short episode just in time before the HBO Game of Thrones premiere. This week, we listen raptly to Kyle’s report from a week spent wandering the streets of LA for the Game of Thrones food truck, discuss the fifteen minute preview of the first episode, and listen to Chase grumble a bit.

You can watch Kyle’s food truck videos on Youtube here, and watch him being interviewed by ThinkHero here.

Hey guys I hope you enjoy the videos. The truck was in LA everyday this past week from Monday to Friday. I was there everyday, but Wednesday so I’ll be putting my terrible editing skills to use a few more times and post a video from each day. Keep your eyes open for those links in this comment section.

  2. Christina

I would just like to add to the choruses of “I am so jealous” out there. Stupid 2,500 year marble temple outside my window… I’d trade it for an HBO food truck.

Move to Santorini. Never leave. Live in bliss.

I’ve been there twice. Nothing in my life has hurt more than leaving Santorini. Twice.

  4. Chase

That was me. I could live in Santorini and never leave and be happy for the rest of my life.

  5. Daniel W

Awesome! I never thought there would be soo many people.

George R.R. Martin who was at the last day of the HBO Game of Thrones food truck on Friday, April 8 mentioned he was attending a promotion event for the show. I had heard rumors the day before about the event so I went myself to check it out. Here it is.

Day 5 – The last day of the HBO Game of Thrones Food Truck. It was a wild ride. They saved the best for last though. George was there himself.

Chase… Jesus Christ. “They cut out two sentences of Ned’s talk!”

Then they add like 5 minutes that’s not in the book at all and you’re like “THAT WAS THE GREATEST, I JUST CAME!”

I’d disagree with the apparent consensus that the Prologue was changed.
Yes, there are differences, every single scene in every episode will have differences, and this isn’t one that’s going to match up the closest, but you have:

-Three rangers go out to find wildlings.
-They find a camp of dead wildlings.
    -The dead camp moves.
-The others come and kill two of the three rangers.

That’s pretty much exactly the same thing. Go watch Starship Troopers and then say that Prologue is different.

  14. mimi

but the prologue WAS changed. i pointed out that it retained the structure of the text, but with obvious omissions and changes. i’m not complaining about it, i understand why the differences are there. but i don’t understand how you can point out:

“Yes, there are differences….this isn’t one that’s going to match up the closest”

and yet tell me that it’s “pretty much exactly the same thing” as the text.

  15. Anonymous

Cosmetic changes only. Literally none of the changes has any affect on the story or anything else outside the first 15 minutes of the show.

I did acknowledge that there are changes. However, they were minor enough, IMO, that yeah, I think it’s pretty true to the book. Hell, Arya being ambidextrous is a bigger change than anything in the Prologue and that doesn’t matter either.

Of course, neither does our disagreement.

    Wooo, one day!

  16. Brian

I’m just surprised that Chase knows enough about the books to be this nit-picky. This is going to be a miserable experience for you if you think this is going to be the books verbatim.

  17. pjstwo

Underneath all Chase’s bitterness is a man who enjoyed the episode (he thought it was “ok” = rave review). And he’s gonna be seeing so many glittery unicorns and care-bears every time Arya shows up that he wont mind his nitpicks.

  18. Heather

I hope so, because Chase’s constant grumblings are really getting annoying.

  19. Christina

Aw. Chase has a little Arya crush. I’m sure she could find a way to gut him by carving a shiv out of a My Little Pony.

I also was expecting to feel the wrath of Chase after the preview, so I feel like his “ok” is a ringing endorsement for all. πŸ™‚

  20. Tom

Oh, this was Tom. Sorry Amin.

  21. Chase

You giant babies. I loved the episode.

Sure I had my issues with it, but fuck that shit. Never take anything i say serjously. Most of the time I’m playing Minecraft and just letting my my mouth talk – my brain stays out of it. That shit was fucking great.

  22. Katie

Hey man, My Little Pony: Friendship is Magic is awesome.

The review that took down its comments was the New York Times, and the venom came from generalizations by the reviewer that sex and nudity was only in the show to entice female viewers. You know, because women watch for the titties.

The tone of the review came down to: “Me and my two friends don’t like fantasy, so I don’t know a woman who will!” Obviously they chose the right person to review the series.

  23. Kyle

Hmmm this may be the second instance of a comment section being shut down because of vicious fans.

The review I mentioned came out awhile ago. Separate from all the recent articles about how the show is only for one sex or the other.

  24. Katie

There’s the article. Martin also posted it on his blog, if you haven’t seen it yet. Basically, instead of reviewing the show she rages against genre fantasy for five-hundred words.

  25. Ash

this episode was recorded before that one came out. trust me, I was getting ready to go into full rant mode for the next recording, but there’s been so many great responses out there, I probably don’t need to.

  26. Inkasrain

However upset Chase may be with the deviations from ASOIAF to Game of Thrones, there’s just no way it can compare to the alterations made to My Little Pony. They absolutely decimated the source material– to say nothing of the debacle of the color of Rainbow’s mane! It was a travesty; I’m still angry about it.

  27. Chase

I had to laugh at this. Well done.

My Little Pony (I NEVER SAY THIS) fucking owns. I am not being “ironic”

  28. Chase

P.S. Rainbow Dash is the best.

(I’m actually surprised how I like all of the characters. Except Twilight Sparkle. They’re all so well done!

  29. pjstwo

As far as the talk about the opening sequence, supposedly its really impressive. HBO is apparently very touchy about cold opens, because they love their intro sequences. So I’d be surprised to see one. If they do it cold, it may speak to how much they regard the series, and are relying on it to kick ass.

  30. Ash

oh yeah, and i just wanted to add, I’m more of the Luna type.

  31. Chase

LUNA LOVEGOOD IS THE BEST CHARACTER IN HARRY POTTER QTIYD

  32. Ashley 2

Ya’ll quit raggin’ on The Borgias it is FLAWLESS!

Camelot is complete and utter trash.

    jsyk.

  33. Zeyik

Hey! Its not complete trash. I continue to watch it for Joesph Fiennes portrayal of Merlin.

Haven’t watched Borgias yet so no comment on that.

  34. Ashley 2

    …I stand by my statement.

  35. mimi

    MISS U GURL.

  36. Ashley 2

Did you like the first episode?!

  37. mimi

yes! it’s a solid episode for a tv show, even with all its liberties.
i think the lines they preserved from the book dialogue are done with some really superb acting.

  38. Ashley 2

OMG. Emilia makes me like Dany. That’s how awesome this episode was.

  39. mimi

LOVED HER. harry lloyd was totally killing it as viserys, too. those two actors almost make up for how shitty and non-mongolian the dothraki look.

  40. Chase

    I liked her boobs

  41. Chase

    I’m just a man

  42. Ray

My Little Pony? What the fuck Chase?

  43. Just wanted to send a shoutout to Kyle for visiting the foodtruck everyday – we really appreciated the support, even if we never sent Mimi a scent box πŸ™‚ I’ll make sure you’re on the list if we get to work on Season Two.

And one correction – that photo I showed you of me on the Throne, that wasn’t no namby pamby Wondercon replica – that was the real deal in Paint Hall, Belfast πŸ™‚ But yeh, I’m still bald.

  44. A Podcast of Ice and Fire

    Thanks Steve!

    -Amin

  45. Kyle

    Hey Steve,

It was great meeting you at the foodtruck. What a great adventure. Thanks for the wonderful week. I had an absolute blast.

If HBO decides to do more wild promotions for season 2 I hope Campfire gets the job.

Oh wow I completely forgot all the pics you showed me were from the actual set. I am still extremely jealous. Some day I’ll fly over there and sneak onto the set. Haha. You would make a badass Tywin.

  46. Astalnar

I always imagined Ned to be a bit grimmer then in show.Even when talking to Robert. But in series Eddard is actualy smiling when saying how he was guarding the North in king’s name. I was realy shocked. Eddard Stark smiling, its something wrong with that picture.

  47. Chase

I’m negative about everything, to be fair, but so many of the characters just don’t fit their book counterparts on the most basic, fundamental levels. It’s kind of a huge bummer.

But that’s what you get with a television adaptation. Expect more of the same…. πŸ™
