Episode 50: Lord Snow
Episode 50 for the week of May 1st, in which we bring you a week-late review of HBO’s Game of Thrones third episode. Listen to us gush over the perfection that is Maisie Williams, respond to listener voicemails, and probably some other things too.
We’ve officially churned out 50 episodes over our 3-year lifespan. Some were good, some were terrible, and then there was Tyrion the Catcher, which defies description. The Podcast of Ice and Fire wants to thank every listener, subscriber, and guest host who has given us feedback, dick jokes, and the will to continue podcasting after all this time. Here’s to House Manwoody, and another 50 episodes of ASOIAF-related laughter.
Warning: this podcast episode (and all HBO’s Game of Thrones review episodes) will contain spoilers for aired episodes as well as all four published books in the A Song of Ice and Fire series. New viewers of the show who have not yet read the books, you’ve been warned.

Good stuff. I had a friend over while listening to it (another huge ASoIaF fan) and he’d never heard the podcast before. The first half made him basically slobber with rage. I had to explain to him that no, Chase isn’t really a hateful troll, he’s just a contrarian.
He calmed down during the second half and ended up enjoying it, and even agreed Chase’s growls add to the show. So you see, House Blackwoody sometimes just needs to be given the opportunity to settle in and burrow deep into the frontal lobe.
Once you accept Blackwoody’s snark, your life is a far better thing.

Congrats on 50! Yay 😀
Syrio Forel is completely different from what I imagined, but I absolutely loved him, the acting was so great, it was really fun to watch that scene, and he looks like the Afro version of Robert Downey Jr lol (sorry, can’t remember the name of the movie :P)

I love that Arya was compared to Laura Ingalls. Little House on the Prairie is my absolutely FAVORITE show ever! And, like I said in Girls Night Out, Arya is who I relate to the most 🙂

I thought it was interesting that they added the line about how Sansa didn’t have any choice but to support the prince since she has to marry him… yet another example of making everyone more sympathetic. Especially since Ned is the one saying it, so he’s giving her a pass.
Also, Mimi, I don’t think Barristan grows a beard (I’m guessing that’s why you pictured him as Gandalf?) until after he leaves the Kingsguard… or at least he’s not described as having a beard until Dany sees him as Arstan.

Wouldn’t call it making her more sympathetic rather than pointing out the obvious. They didn’t actually change anything from the story.

We’re trying to shorten our show commentary for a number of different reasons. Primarily we’re going to be getting back on track with regular episodes, in addition to the HBO show commentary, and that’s a lot of time spent talking into a computer and sitting behind the editing desk (Ashley is too good to us). We’re all still pretty busy (except me) and doing two 2 hour recordings a week is a little too much for some of our schedules (not mine).
Besides, if we keep doing just Game of Thrones commentary how are we any different from every other review podcast/blog/blog/blog/website/pop culture/fart/media outlet that’s covering Game of Thrones?

how are you different? do you want the list alphabetically or by obscenity? ; )
no seriously. I see your point there. I still preferred the longer episodes ; )

Too short!!! What am I supposed to do for the rest of the workday???
:’-(
What you all should do is walk around with microphones when not podcasting, and record your daily lives so that I can live through you.

Everybody gives Kyle shit about the uneducated girls. But Mimi seems to really be into the uneducated boys. I thought Chatroulette was just for horny people. Admit it Mimi, you were trolling for Manwoody and uneducated dudes. Ive never gone on Chatroulette, I wonder what its like, but Ive stayed away mostly because I imagine it would be like wading through a sea of cock and balls (Manwoody if you like) to get to a pair of ah-tahs. Which doesnt at all seem worth it.
The Hugh death scene went on for so long that I too was looking for the hose that sprays blood out it.
Oh and Kyle, I want to say good job on getting George to do the sound clip for the episode. I wanted to mention it before, but kept forgetting. Good job buddy.
Oh and you guys just mentioned my facebook post. Nice. Yeah, Im totally looking forward to Ashley’s reaction in the next podcast.
Mimi dont listen to that itunes post. Your opinions matter and dont let anyone tell you different.
You guys should totally start a get us on the show campaige.
I feel like I know you guys a lot better than I should should now 🙂 but still a good episode.

Great podcast…. Just a pet peeve about your pet peeves concerning the HBO series.
Ya’ll mention a few times how ridiculous you find it that the Dothraki are ethnically diverse. But in fact, the people of the Central Asian steppe were diverse, and interbreeding between various groups was common.
Ya’ll mention that the Dotraki liked to keep their blood lines “pure,” but we should take that with a grain of salt–humans always interbreed.
While it might be the case that HBO cast the Dotraki extras diversely due to logistical considerations, this ends up being a happy byproduct reflective of the historical reality of the Eurasian steppe.
It might not be canonical, but HBO’s Dothraki demonstrate more historical “realism” than George RR Martin’s naive vision of pure bloodlines on the steppe.

I liked it when Cersei said “You can always fuck painted whores.”
That’s how you explain the birds and the bees to a future monarch. No beating around the bush.
