Happy 4th of July. This episode highlights why Aaron doesn’t host, ever, because of all the ‘ums’ and ‘uhs’ I say while I think out loud, and if you listen carefully you might catch the episode title a few times.

Yeah, Ashley1 is right, it’s a shame GRRM is so tough on fanfiction. I mean, I can understand why he choses to be, but let’s be honest: people who really like the setting will write about it anyways, just without posting it on the internet. And if the Green Ronin publication of the RPG is somewhat successful, stories will start popping up online no matter what GRRM’s policy on that is.
And no matter who you look at it, they’d be a great way to bridge the gap between GRRM’s own publications. Yeah, I know that 9 out of 10 would be just to create pairings (looks at Ashley), but like with every fanfiction that one out of ten will be really readable.
As for actual series to bridge the gap, how about Erikson’s “Malazan Books of the Fallen” series?
Anyways, I’ll upload and post a map of the Free Cities once I’m back at my own pc.

I’d just like to express my sincere appreciation of your podcast – it helps to have it to make time pass untill Mr Martin either comes out with the next book or simply dies… However it would be somewhat interesting to hear a non-american voice in your podcast. Perhaps you ought to advertise for a non-US goon to fill a guest spot?

think you need to be a bit more specific, considering we have two Canadians and a few obvious ethnic backgrounds. do you mean a european background?
anyways at this point, i don’t think we could handle really having more hosts, i have great difficulty not constantly interupting people as is, i know we’ve discussed having guests on the show so it’s definitly an idea for a future show premis.

Yes. It would be great hearing a different accent than an american one (and yes, for us Eurotrash the Canadian accents sounds american).

Probably the best place to find current Fanart is a deviantart community called “Winterfell”. The collection ranges from professional paintings to doodles. Looking through it all is how I spend my time waiting for the next book.

Regarding the maps, don’t forget that interesting bit at the king’s moot when one of the iron born (I forget his name. Let’s call him Lief) says that there is another continent waiting to be settled to the west of Westeros.

does he really? shit i gotta look that up, cause by the sounds of Dany’s prophesy it makes it seem like she may travel east from Asshei to get to Westeros…

Hi guys, a great (though short) podcast. Thought I’d toss some comments & stuff out so here goes. Ashley – I share your weeping at the dearth of fanfic. It might not all be GRRM-caliber, but at least it would be something interesting to read. If you’re jonesing for more Westeros while you wait for ADWD though, try out either of the AGOT RPG systems (either the defunct Guardians of Order system or the nearly finished Green Ronin version). There’s also ASOIAF MUSH called ‘Blood of Dragons’ you can find at the Citadel.
Speaking of maps, have any of you seen the GRRM approved Westeros map that GoO included in their AGOT RPG? Martin insisted that they not include a legend for scale but thanks to The Wall we can figure it out anyhow. Beautiful piece of work.
Finally, if you’re looking for Martinesque reading, try Elizabeth Moon’s ‘The Deed of Paksenarrion’. It’s low-magic, militaristic, and equally brutal as ASOIAF. I’ve read my copy into disintegration and had to replace it once already.
Keep up the good work, looking forward to the next episode.

As far as “hearing a differnt accent.” I’m from awful yuppie California, but I can do a stereotypical Russian accent, as well as Irish/Scottish. I know that’s not the same as actually having transatlantic foreigners on the show, but it would be hilarious and awful none the less.

Haha, is “Irish/Scottish” some kind of hybrid accent, or are you just counting on the fact that most Americans can’t tell them apart and wouldn’t know which one you were doing?

Nice podcast guys. Just a a few sincere comments. Overall I really like it. One of the ashley’s I had trouble hearing however… may be a mic issue or the fact that my ipod connector only lets me hear out of the left side =) If other people have an issue maybe a different mic would cure it? Secondly, I found the what-if topic to be boring and hope you don’t do another one like you said you might. 😉 I’ll still listen but the original just didn’t do anything for me. I do, however, really enjoy the prophesy and theory discussions. Anyway keep up the great work and I look forward to hearing more episodes and telling my fellow ice and fire friends about your works. Good job!!

Glad to know you guys are annoyed at GRRM’s ban on fanfiction too. It doesn’t help the fandom to stay active, but what’s worse IMO is the fundamentalist fans going fic-hunting… way to ruin the fun!
Oh, and it’s the first time I’m commenting, but I’m a faithful listener of the podcast since episode one. Keep up the good work!

Damn, the Westeros forums is really slow. Someone asked where they get ice for Pycelle’s tea or whatever. Hopefully ADWD will speed it up.
Ah, fanfic. I like the elusive, forbidden feeling of it.
Keep up the podcast!

Hot Pie for President?

Yeah unfortunately there are a number of people who believe Hot Pie is actually a radical Dornish extremist, and is going to allow them and the wildlings to run free all over Westeros.

I’m concerned about the disappearing natural habitats of the snarks and grumpkins. What are Hot Pie’s views on the current deforestation occurring north of the Wall and its greater environmental ramifications?
