Episode 15: Discovering the Magic
Episode 15 for the week of September 21st, in which we continue our re-read project, discussing chapters 11 – 15 of A Game of Thrones (and a lot of completely unrelated things as well). We discover Catelyn’s true identity, how Robb got to be such a good swordsman, and the logistics of the Field of Fire. Our final trial guest host is Chase.

I just about did a spit take laughing after Mimi said that she’s enemies with the Chinese (in no small part due to the fact that I actually am Chinese).
I like how your podcast has a lot of humor in it. That makes it so much more engaging and fun to listen to. The only other book series podcast I listened to before was one for the wheel of time (which if I’m not mistaken had your MIA Ben as one of the hosts), but i ended up bailing because it was too dry for my tastes.
Keep up the good work. I usually ignore asoiaf for months at a time, since only half a book has been released since I picked up the series 7-8 years ago (Btw I hate how most of you started about a year or so ago. You don’t know what true patience is. You suck.), but your podcasts have kept up my interest in the series lately. So thanks.
And Mimi, if it makes you feel any better, I don’t consider you an enemy. Mongolians make up such as small percentage of the Asian-American population, I barely acknowledge their existence, so you got that going for you.

Great episode again guys, I’m really enjoying the re-read.
Just a couple of comments:
1) Do you think Tyrion’s complete and utter fascination with dragons (which I had completely forgotten about) plus his clever use of wildfire in the defence of King’s Landing be foreshadowing his future role as a dragon rider?
2) The fight that I really want to see (again) is Brienne vs. Jaime. Daario vs. Jorah and Euron vs. Victarion wouldn’t be bad either. As far as mud pit fights are concerned, I think I’d pass on Jaime and Sandor and go for, say, Cersei and Asha instead…
Speaking of awesome confrontations: Varys vs. Littlefinger in a game of cyvasse would also be interesting 🙂
3) I would love to see Sam “the Slayer” kick Randyll’s ass. But it’s probably not going to happen while Randyll’s near KL and Sam is in Oldtown.
4) As far as the Hound’s origins are concerned – House Clegane is descened from a kennel master of the Lannisters isn’t it? And its coat of arms has dogs on it. So it seems pretty natural for Sandor to adopt the Hound as a nickname and have a helm made in the shape of a Hound’s head. I think the other reason for going for the whol Hound thing is that Sandor really didn’t want to become a knight like Gregor – so he needed some sort of awesome nickname to mitigate for the lack of the “Ser” honorific. And the Hound fit the bill given the family origins.
BTW well done to all the guest hosts. Hope to hear from Breanna and Chase again at some stage. Welcome Nancy!

Your podcasts make my exercise time so much more enjoyable! Wish you put out a new one everyday. One podcast is only enough for one day so I have to resort to Pottercast or something equally unstimulating waiting for another episode of this one. Wah! I’m such a nerd! Anyway, thanks for all the time and energy you guys put into this podcast. We listeners do appreciate you very much. Chase, you have a great sounding voice.

great!
Great job, guys. I haven’t listened to the latest episode yet. All I want to say is that the site looks perfect now. Good call putting pics up too. Keep it up!

What ever happened to that Ben guy?
I skipped from episode 4 to this one, and swear that guy was the same one that did a podcast for Dragonmount.com which was about Robert Jordan’s Wheel of Time. Does he just travel around doing podcasts for Fantasy books?
He disappeared from that one too, but did a Crazy Theory Segment which was great. Can you guys add 1 Crazy theory to each podcast?
There are some great ones out there, and some that maybe aren’t so crazy, but really make you think.
Sep 30th, 2008
mimi
yeah, ben used to do a WoT podcast as well. he mysteriously disappeared from ours after ep 7 but had some excellent contributions while he was hosting.
also i am totally with you on the crazy theory segment. i’m trying to decide if the segment would work better as a listener-contributed segment or not. what do you think?

Isn’t that what I’m doing 🙁
ALWAYS TRYING TO SHOW ME UP MIMI
It’s cause I’m white, isn’t it.

BUT YOU DON’T EVEN DO IT. EVER.
Sep 30th, 2008
Brianna
Ben was probably pissed on you for always hating on the Wheel of Time, Mimi.
and I was about to suggest a crazy theory section and Aaron if you ever need a crazy theory just let me know I have quite a few. Although what you’ve been doing isn’t exactly a crazy theory section because you keep trying to rationalize them.
Sep 30th, 2008
Aaron
Sorry but giant birds in the Eyrie is retarded, not “crazy”. They have history books going back thousands of years. They have myths of the first war against the Others. No giant birds.
Uh
Yeah send me some, I hate the Westeros boards.

Seriously. You have Ashley 1 AND me, between the two of us I’d bet we know every crazy theory out there.

just one thing
Make sure to place a download link somewhere, guys. I had to dig in archive.org to get one. 🙂
Sep 30th, 2008
Aaron
Thats where our old content was going.
We DID have download links which were automatically generated by the streaming player you see in each episode post. But we switched the player. So we’ve gotta add the links. Which means editing a lot of posts. 🙁
Sep 30th, 2008
mimi
check the menu bar up top. i’ve thrown up a page of download links JUST 4 U. we would rather con listeners into subscribing so we can keep track of our listener population, but i understand that not everyone will be down with that.

I liked the part where you discussed which good character might potentially turn evil, as well as the part where you discussed Littlefinger for a bit.
I’ll combine the two into one answer: I think that Sansa will succumb to Littlefinger’s corruptive influence and become one vile mean bitch. Under his mentoring, she will acquire the needed intelligence and cunning to change her character of an innocent and naive girl to a ruthless schemer. We all know that Littlefinger has one serious shortcoming: His former feelings for Catelyn, which he now has for Sansa. This will be his downfall. He will invest too much into Sansa; He will fail to see the threat she imposes, and she will overthrow him.

You used to talk about votes that went on, for favorite podcaster and things like that. Where can I vote?
Will you all load a Poll window on your website?
I’d like a question of the week that I can vote on.
I guess the real question is can any of you work the poll?
Oct 1st, 2008
mimi
we might reimplement a poll in the near future, depending on how difficult it will be to incorporate it into the layout. the specific one you mentioned was up around late march or early april, and chris voted himself to the top.

Well I would vote for you Mimi.

Thought you guys might find this clip interesting in light of your previous discussion as to who should play who in an ideal world if a movie/tv series of ASOIAF were made. Some of the character/actor combos are quite good: http://au.youtube.com/watch?v=enlcKLJ5ino

I can’t belive you guys didn’t mention Wylla in Eddard’s chapter!! One day you are going to have to have the Jon Parentage episode. You can’t avoid it forever. I’ll be waiting for it.
I nominate Lady Smallwood as a Good Mother in the series. She’s the one who takes Arya in with the BWB and gives her a bath and a couple of clean dresses and is concerned for her in lieu of her own children.
And the epic one-on-one I’d want to see? Vicatarion versus Euron. It’ll happen.
Oct 2nd, 2008

YES. best 1 on 1 idea ever. and it might even go down too.

Mimi stole my line. 🙁
I too love Lady Smallwood

OK a three-year too late reply but I have only just discovered your podcast and I’m listening in order.
Brianna: Mimi steals *everyone’s* lines! It’s because she talks and types far more than everyone else combined! 😉
Mimi, I think you’re awesome with awesome-sauce, intelligent and funny. But jeeze girl, let someone else have a turn riding the pony.
That said I’d pay good money to have you end each podcast with a rant session. The “reasons I’d take Chris to a desert island and set him on fire” is still one of the funniest things I have heard. Ever.
be well guys
Mike (slightly older than Chris’ 78 years of age)

Because I don’t want to go home with girls like you.

i think the funny part of that statement was the implication that girls would want to go home with you at all.
especially in light of your terrible haircut.

Does anyone ever join the IRC channel?
For the past week or so it’s been just me and one other dude constantly missing each other, logging in and out.
Right after the next episode is released, hopefully more people show up for at least a few days.

Tyrion vs. Cersei.
That is seriously one that I would like to see.
I mean its kind of a joke one-on-one fantasy, since it would really just consists of bitch slapping and a crossbow. It would be the ultimate fan service, though. Tyrion could shoot Cersei with his handy kinslaying crossbow, she could deflect it with a bitch slap, lose her balance, and fall out a window (to pay homage to one of my favorite deaths).
But seriously. Victarion vs. Euron. They could yell about doors for the first bit, you know, like pre-fight banter.

It took me so long to realize it was my e-mail you were talking about for some reason, there are other Anthony Ss out there. That’s pretty cool you guys talked about it AND mentioned the door creaking again during. Just to clear up what I thought:
I probably shouldn’t have mentioned Robb when I said I should have seen the Red Wedding coming, maybe Robb isn’t as easy to replace. What I meant was, I just think that for every POV character Martin kills off, there is a similar character to replace them. Like Davos seems a very similar character to Ned; honor, loyalty to family and his king, quiet and sad sometimes, etc. Do you think Ned and Davos could be in the same book for long? Maybe that’s why Arys Oakheart was killed off, he was there to see what was up in Dorne, and was too similar to Jon (giving into a woman and questioning his honor and duty) so he didn’t last. Sansa is becoming like a mother figure to Robert and is pretty sad, and will probably become the good female politician her mother failed to be. I don’t think we could have older Sansa and Cat in the same book for long. And yea Cat is still around but she did die and now she is completely different, she’s all about killing and revenge.
I’m just a major Stark fan (including Jon Snow and minus Cat, though I did like her chapters to see what the Starks and Tullys were up to), also a big fan of the Hound and the Blackfish, which I’m sure Brynden is going to the Vale and with his help maybe, I still think it’ll be Sansa who brings Littlefinger down. Who else could? Don’t know where Rickon and Arya will come in, except that Arya will be a good fight, and by “a babe” I just meant that as she’s growing she reminds me of Lyanna who was a babe lol.
Anyways, great episode, love the humor and keep it up.
