Episode 16: We Love Manwoody
Episode 16 for the week of October 5th, in which we continue our re-read project, discussing chapters 16 – 20 of A Game of Thrones. Guest host Chase drops in again for this episode, creaking ensues, and we discuss plans to represent the podcast at Dragoncon 2009. Also, we revisit Aaron’s Quiet Isle sexual fantasies.

Hey guys. Once again, great episode.
Just a few comments:
1) I think that there is more to Davos than just loyalty. Like Ned, he has principles and is willing to stick to them. Look at what happened with Edric Storm – Stannis wanted Edric dead, but rather than just meekly agree with his King, Davos went out of his way to save Edric’s life, even risking his own life in the process. Selfless acts like this speak volumes about Davos’ strength of character.
2) Just a thought about Sansa’s being really freaked out when meeting with Ilyn Payne: perhaps it was foreshadowing two of the scariest events in Sansa’s life, both which involved Ilyn:
a) Ilyn chopping Ned’s head off
b) Ilyn nearly chopping Sansa’s head off when all the women thought that the Lannisters were going to lose the Battle of King’s Landing to Stannis.
3) There is no doubt Petyr wanted to ignite a Stark vs Lannister conflict, which explains why he told Cat it was Tyrion’s dagger. We know this because Petyr told Lysa to poison Jon and then to write the letter to Winterfell informing Cat that Cersei had murdered Jon. What better way to start a Stark vs Lannister conflict than to tell Ned that a Lannister had killed one of his most respected mentors?
4) Just a suggestion for dress-up at Dragoncon: Chris should go as Victarion seeing as he thinks that Vic is so old. Or given the whole “Chris is creepy” discussion perhaps going as “creaking door” Euron would be more apt.
5) Good to have Chase on again.
6) Don’t you guys dare break up. The wait for ADWD will be boring without you.

dude, it totally slipped my mind that littlefinger masterminded the jon arryn deal with lysa! that makes much more sense now.
and as to your first point, i had always considered davos’ smuggling of edric storm as another type of loyalty to the king: doing what’s best for stannis, despite stannis’ shortsightedness i think davos understood that endangering edric was not the wishes of his king, it was the wishes of melisandre manipulating and coercing his king.
kind of like how when your best friend in high school tells you to flash your boobs at the seedy creeps behind the movie theater and your parents totally ground you before you can go so you’re seething but they only want the best for you!

You probably have a point there. But I still think that sometimes Davos is unfairly typecast as Stannis’ lapdog. He is loyal – but not just in the “yes master” way (like Areo Hotah). He’s actually willing to stand up to his King and tell him what he thinks is the right or wrong thing to do in certain situations. IMO that’s what makes him/will make him such an effective Hand. The fact that he’s not some stuck-up nobleman probably helps as well.

Wow, mimi’s into Tool? (or should I say that tool’s into mimi, to go along with the general theme of this episode?) That’s plus cool points for you, Mimi. ^^

i was into tool when i was 14 years old and a high school mallgoth. definitely have acquired different taste since then, sorry.

A few words about the episode itself:
There’s a few important (sort of) moments of a chapter in which you should go more in depth. Refer to points 2 and 3 of John’s post. This episode kinda left me with the feeling that there wasn’t enough discussion. That is not to say that you must go into pointless “discussing the trees”, or that you must drastically increase the running time of each episode.
Peace!

I never said Peh’tur or whatever the hell you said I said. I said Pe’Tire, like a tire on your car. Basically I read it the way the first 3 audio books are read.
Why spell Lisa, Lysa, and why spell Peter, Petyr? Then again why spell sir, ser, so I don’t really care. Hearing Peter actually took me by surprise when I listened to Lee’s auidio read, and it’s grown on me, so I’ll go with you on that one.
However, if you’re going by what sounds best then, Lisa Arryn is no where near as good as Lysa Arryn?
Anyway I don’t care, damn you all and your crappy pronunciations!
Oct 13th, 2008
John
Yeah sorry DocBean, I must say that I’m with the podcasters on this point. I just think words/names like Lysa, Petyr, Jaime, Ser, Catelyn, Symon are all just spelt differently just so there’s some sort of “distance” between the real world and Westeros. IMO they are all still intended to be pronounced according to the traditional names: Lisa, Peter, Jamie, Sir, Caitlin, Simon.
BTW, I can understand why you would pronounce “Petyr” as Peh-tur because the second-best soccer goalkeeper on the planet right now is probably Petr Cech, the Czech Republic goalkeeper, and his name is pronounced “Peh-tur”. But “pe-tire”? That’s just weird: audio book or no audio book. Next they’re going to pronounce Varys as “var-ise”.
The most debatable pronunciations in ASOIAF are probably maester (is it may-ster [in true FFX style], plain old “master” or “mie-ster”) and, surprisingly, “damphair” (is it dam-fair or damp-hair??)

Dickon Manwoody
Could you all do ONE podcast where you don’t say the words – Fan Boy, Fan Girl, Shipping, or Fan Fiction??? Let’s please keep the nerd level down a bit.
Oct 13th, 2008
Brianna
Their nerd level is one of the great things about this podcast. It make it seem like we are dealing with reall people insteed of people who just like to talk about books
Oct 13th, 2008
Dickon Manwoody
I’d say Madden football, and SoIaF are my two nerdy things.
I like that the podcast is hosted by people that don’t seem like total dorks.
When I hear 5 references to Harry Potter, and the other hosts making fun of Chris for not knowing what “shipping” means like they did in the last episode – then I feel like I’m listening to a Fantasy podcast.
Which isn’t a compliment, even though it’s true.
I’m with Chris when he said he was proud not to know what shipping means, I didn’t either. I like that Chris and Mimi and others seem like the type of people I’d hang out with, not Larping, hanging out in their parents basement, Dungeon and Dragon types.
I’m all for nerdy fantasy fiction books.
I’m just saying let’s keep the “Fanboy” talk down a bit.
Oct 13th, 2008
Aaron

Sorry Mimi, You’re dead.
Oct 13th, 2008
mimi
i can totally understand the sentiment, but you could also look at it in a different light: just because we know nerd shit doesn’t mean we take it seriously. i think we honestly mock fanfiction in nearly every episode. it’s not as if we are honestly arguing over what colors we are going to paint the wildling spears on our dark sword miniatures.
on that note, i really do consider myself a nerd and am not ashamed.
Oct 13th, 2008
DocBean
Maybe I’d paint them white. You think they use Weirwood? or maybe they use Sentinel wood. Anyone know what a Sentinel tree is supposed to look like? I always thought redwood. So maybe the spears should be painted Redish brown???
You guys should talk more about trees.
Disclaimer for Nancy: This is a joke, I in no way am attacking Mimi, I was simply running with her miniature joke. I do not condone the violence of any type of Song of Ice and Fire Tree species, and/or wildlings, or painters of dark sword miniatures. I am simply making a tree joke. This tree joke is not meant as an attack on Aaron either. I think Aaron is funny, and interesting to listen to, as are each and every one of the Podcast of Ice and Fire Hosts, and guest hosts.
I am not questioning the pronunciation of any types of Song of Ice and Fire Trees. I am also not ashamed to be a nerd; however, like Chris and Dikon Manwoody, I did not know what “Shipping” means, I still don’t understand where that word comes from.
That is all.
Oct 14th, 2008
John
From the ever-reliable Wikipedia:
Shipping, derived from the word “relationship”, is a general term for fans’ emotional and/or intellectual involvement with the ongoing development of romance in a work of fiction.

dude, aaron’s answer to “what is slash fiction” was one of the best laughs I’ve had as a result of this podcast. go nerdy talk!

Richard
Yes I agree with John.
Petyr is Peter. Lysa is Lisa.
However I disagree with Varys.
If all the Y’s in the story are supposed to be hard Es then why would Varys be pronounced like eh? instead of E?
Chris and Mimi say Varys like:
Var – like Hair
and ys – like saying the letter S outloud.
they say Vair-S.
I prefer:
Var – like Car
and ys – like Ease So Var Ease. like how Ashley says it.
or Vair Ease maybe.
now i’m confused…..
Oct 13th, 2008
mimi
your pronunciation totally makes sense to me. i think i started calling him “vair-s” because of the audiobooks or something. it sounds pretty natural both ways though.
Oct 13th, 2008

Put the pull up again!
I would have said Mimi 1, then Chris 2, but I might be changing my mind.
I seem to agree with Chris most of the time.
Aaron is definitely the worst – sorry aaron.

Aaron, don’t believe it. You are a valuable member of the group. You add humor and are always present when we record. I understand that this is a place to discuss what we posted and add both good and bad comments about what we say, but DocBean it is just plain rude of you to criticize a person. We all do what we can to add to this podcast and make it enjoyable to all you listeners. The podcast is our time to air our thoughts on the book. We may say the names differently and mention things we like or dislike other than ASoIaF but that’s just a little flavor of or individual personalities. If you disagree with us please keep posting here or send us audio files but no more attacking individual members.
Oct 13th, 2008
Aaron
Thanks. I am a big boy though. I don’t mind it.
Oct 13th, 2008
John
Don’t let them get to you Aaron. If you ever start doubting your abilities as an excellent podcaster, just re-listen to the Fice and Ire podcast. Pure and and unadulterated gold I say. We are not going to pension you off to the Quiet Isle just yet…
But seriously, I think that there are two things that set this podcast apart:
– Passionate discussion of the best fantasy series ever
– Great humour
And Aaron contributes to both of those aspects IMO.
As for the nerdiness, well I’m sorry, but if you’re listening to a one and a half hour podcast about a fantasy series, you have got to be prepared for some “nerdy” jargon. Anyway, the wiki definition of “nerd” is someone who passionately pursues an intellectual interest. And passionately pursuing ASOIAF is exactly what I want from these podcasters.

I am the Millhouse of the podcast. The Simpsons would suck without Millhouse. Therefore the podcast would suck without me. I have to set the bar low so the rest can look really awesome.

I thought it was understood that Aaron was the Pate of the Podcast. Like, Joffrey and Tommen’s whipping boy? When I said he was the worst, it was meant as an endearing compliment.
he IS the Millhouse of the podcast. Stained, and discarded bedsheets and all.
I was not criticizing him as a person, I was trying to make sure he didn’t feel left out. Let’s face it, his knowledge of the books is probably below the rest of you, but he’s a crucial part of the podcast none-the-less. So let’s all calm down, we’re all friends here.

Hahaha I appreciate how much people care about the podcast.
Please disagree with us all you want, but we aren’t changing it anytime soon I think. You guy really know we talk about Pokeman and Mimi’s childhood drawings because we don’t know what the fuck we are doing, right?

Best episode yet.
You know those scenes where Tyrion gives Jon avuncular advice? Try reading them again with the assumption that Tyrion is literally Jon’s uncle. Does that make the story better or worse?
Just something to think about.
Oct 15th, 2008
Dan
Two things I was thinking about after listening to the podcast.
1.I am not really down with the whole Varys set up Tyrion to kill Tywin thing. Think about it. How many things had to happen right for this to take place? Tywin had to leave at the right time, Shae had to be ushered in at the right time, Tyrion had to decide he wanted to do it. How Would Varys know he would ask to go there? Why did Shae have to be there? Was he going to kill him anyway if he hadn’t known his dad was banging her? If so, why put Shae in there? For dramatic flair?!?! I doubt it. Seems much more likely to me that it just happened by chance. Some people say “but Tywin didn’t mess around with no ho’s…” but doesn’t that just seem likes GRRM’s style? I can see Tywin saying, “Yeah I banged her, but you can’t make a ho a housewife son” meaning at least he isn’t in love. Maybe that is why he didn’t bother to mention her when Tyrion confronted him, if Tyrion had his crossbow then he had to know he had already seen Shea.
2.My thoughts on nerds. I am a semi closet fantasy fan. If you saw me walking down the street you would probably never guess it. That said, I have never read, or watched anything related to Harry Potter.(I like getting laid every now and then) Being a nerd is cool as long as you don’t take it too far and get out some. So I don’t mind a little geeky banter on the show, just try to keep it at a reasonable level. When that new guy started talking about different forms of dragon armor in separate fantasy realms I had an impulse to stuff him in a locker.
P.S. Mimi, man up and show your boobs.
Dan
Oct 16th, 2008
John
Interesting comments about the Tyrion/Tywin murder. But I am still inclined to think that Varys set it up. Tywin didn’t have to “leave at the right time” – Varys knew he would be stuck on the toilet because of some sort of laxative that was given to him.
I reckon that Shae was there for insurance – it would prevent Tyrion from going up there and then changing his mind.
As to your point about it happening by chance – you surely can’t believe that. The chest under the crossbow, Tywin on the privy, Shae in the bed, Varys’ perfect instructions, the brazier that illimunated the climb to the Tower of the Hand – IMO the stars can’t have aligned so perfectly without some intervention from the Spider.
