Episode 26: Don’t Tell Mimi The Babysitter’s Dead

Episode 26 for the week of June 10th, in which we talk about Chapter 54 of Game of Thrones (focusing far too little on Hodor’s nude scene), the bannermen under House Stark, who Robb might have sent to lead his troops south in the war and probably a lot of other things that might have been cut.

There’s a surprise return of one of our original hosts, but you’ll just have to listen to find out who that is!

I agree with Ashley 2 and Amin, I really want the next book, but if it takes Martin 10 years, then so be it, as long as it’s insanely good. I can imagine what it’s like when you’re writing one of the most epic stories of our time and thinking some parts just aren’t working. He may be writing 1 paragraph a hundred times and it’s just not sounding right. I don’t like it when writers have a deadline, it really affects the quality of their work.

There is a book, “Bitten” by Kelley Armstrong, very good werewolf book (possibly the best), it took her about 8 years to write it. The sequels all had a deadline of 1 year or maybe 2, and they weren’t nearly as good as the first. (the second book “Stolen” was pretty good, the rest are not worth it I don’t think, but my sister likes them). Anyways my point is, Martin doesn’t owe us anything. If he has a different story fresh in his mind then he should write it. I hope he takes his time with Ice and Fire, it’s the work that matters and he knows it. It’s his greatest work.

Another thing I had in mind when listening to this episode, not really that relevant but the 2 younger Karstark brothers that die are named after the first Lord in the North and the last; Torhen (spl?) Stark the King who nelt (first Lord), and Eddard (the last Lord, Robb is then King). I liked Amin’s observation, the Greatjon is wicked so I hope he gets out and kills some Freys and Boltons and supports the Starks til the end. (I don’t hate all Freys though, a couple are innocent like the Frey knight who escorted Catelyn to Renly, Olivar, Robb’s squire, and Roslin, Edmure’s wife).

As for other Lords who could have led the northmen army instead of Bolton. I think Bolton was a good choice, he never backstabbed Ned in Robert’s Rebellion, i think he’s loyal til he sees a better opportunity. If Robb never married Jeyne Westerling and Edmure let Tywin west so Stannis would win, things would have worked out perhaps. But other than Bolton, there were 2 lords we never really knew, Lord Cerwyn (battle axe sigil) and Lord Hornwood (moose bull sigil). Bolton and Hornwood don’t get along, so perhaps Lord Cerwyn would have been a good choice, or Lord Glover. (there is only Lady Cerwyn left and Lawrence Snow, Lord Hornwood’s bastard who is a ward of the Glovers).

It was argued in the episode that Catelyn might have killed Jamie, as Karstark attempted to, if she had known he pushed Bran.

Catelyn did know that Jamie pushed Bran before she let him free. When she gets Jamie drunk in the cells of Riverrun he confesses to everything. However, he says Lannisters were not involved in the assassination attempt.

Just more evidence that Catelyn is stupid. 🙂

When you think about it, Martin getting another TV series was a stroke of misfortune. I mean, if pewter figurines are enough to distract him from novel writing, there is not much hope for us book lovers now. Even F. Scott Fitzgerald stopped writing books when Holywood called. And he had stuff to say.
