Episode 34: The Blackwoody
Episode 34 for the week of January 10th, in which we lament our status as the outcast of the ASOIAF fandom, find out more about George’s recent book signing, and return to our long overdue reread of A Game of Thrones. We discuss chapters 56 and 57, with guest hosts Kyle and Sebastian being significantly more handsome and generally better than the rest of us.

Free breakfast! I hope it’s pizza.
Bryndon never struck me as a badass, though. Guy’s too nice.
I think the reason Bryndon was pissed at Jon in Feast was because Jon sent a letter to Tommen asking for men to help Stannis and the Night’s Watch. The letter was a declaration of neutrality, but if I remember correctly it was taken as a big “fuck you” by the Riverlands. I’m not sure, but I do know Bryndon had political reasons for hating him.

P.S. – Stannis is awesome. He’s even more awesome with Davos. 😀

I thought I’d post the quote from aCoK where I think Barristan showed up.. but this is my crackpot therory…
“Outside the armory, Ser Endrew Tarth was working with some raw recruits. They’d come in last night with Conwy, one of the wandering crows who roamed the Seven Kingdoms collecting men for the Wall. This new crop consisted of a greybeard leaning on a staff, two blond boys with the look of brothers, a foppish youth in soiled satin, a raggy man with a clubfoot, and some grinning loon who must have fancied himself a warrior.”

whoops, can’t make it bold, but you can see where I tried. Greybeard leaning on a staff… this is long before he meets up with Dany when he claims to have been sent by Illyrio.
My guess is that Illyrio/Varys (who are loyal to the “Realm”) sent him down to check out Jon, and then he went off and took a ship from eastwatch or somethin’
Thoughts?!

I remember that part. I always just thought it was a really old recruit. I still don’t think my opinion has changed.
Barristan’s beard is white, anyway!

White hair. Black hair. It’s all the same right Chase?

I’m still not convinced! If anyone would know that Rhaegar had a bastard with Lyanna, it’d be one of the kingsguard… and seeing as he’s the last one alive from back then and was the Lord Commander or whatever.. and that we never hear/see of this ‘greybeard’ again…
that’s why it’s a crackpot theory!

a) I thought Brandon hated Jon because he thought he became lord commander based on a deal with the Lannisters, from the way Jamie spoke of him.
b) I just want the mountain clan back and not through Sansa POV. The humor would be lost because Sansa would stay far away from them. The jokes would not see the light of day.
c) Sansa: I wasn’t thinking a lost of family loyalty but rather her being so cold. Point: after Lady’s death she shows no emotion toward Jon Arryn’s squire death. She even begins to wonder why she didn’t feel anything. That is basically what I meant. I agree she was always a Tully over Stark.
d) I think Tyrion would go back to the Vale, not to fight but rather make sure the Vale falls. Basically command the troops and help make sure the Vale falls. I doubt he would fight.
e) Was blown away by Sebastian’s theory until he said grey beard.
What is the name of you book Nancy?
Good episode. Hopefully George will recognize the podcast soon.

glad you guys are back. I just read the books summer/fall 2010 and the person that recommended them did not tell me that they weren’t finished so I was ignorant of the lack of ADWD until October so to get my fix I started listening to you guys. It is pretty cute how in 2008 you are sure that ADWD is going to be published -by the end of the year, early next year…
I haven’t gotten all the way through the podcasts but have you guys ever discussed the rising power of the religions and where that might go. I am thinking of the Reformation and Catholic v. Protestant or possibly the Spanish Inquisition being a reference point. Now that Cersei is out of control and the High Septon has locked her up. I see the High Septon v. Melisandre v. Drowned God being a new conflict and infidels being put to death and differing definitions of infidels. Will Tommen rule or will it be the High septon?

First, the Black Fish is a stone cold bad ass with a cool name. When he mentions the posibility of combat to the one-armed Jaime, Jaime thinks that would have been a “sweet” fight once.
Second, the parley between the Black Fish and Jaime is one of the best scences in the series. And the Black Fish kicks Jaime’s ass.
Third, I like the idea of a totally cool bad ass character who also happens to be gay.
And how is this for a can of worms: I think the Black Fish would make a good regent for Rob’s son, after the Black Fish teams up with Ser Raynald.
Thanks for the podcast, guys.

Concerning the Blackfish, I always figured he would seek out and hook up with the Brotherhood without Banners since they were still fighting the Lannisters. This would also bring him into contact with Zombie Cat.
I never got the impression that he was gay while reading the books. He always struck me as the kind of guy that would stroll into town, be a badass, some hottie would fall in love with him, he’d hit it, and ride out the next day. He couldn’t be tied down.
