Episode 41 for the week of March 6th, in which we review the recent A Dance with Dragons news with excitement (except Chase). We discuss chapters 69 and 70 ofย A Game of Thrones, MC Tywin and blood magic sacrifices. We are joined by Sebastian the Swede, who sacrificed his dinner to guest host with us.

  1. it’s not the same as the press thing, the 15 minutes sneak peek is actually 15 minutes of the first episode…

  2. mimi

oh, i thought the panel at the press conference got to view the first 15 minutes of the pilot.

  3. Tom

Did Tysha know Tyrion was a Lannister? I didn’t think she knew.

I’m pretty sure Melisandre date rapes Stannis to make the shadow babies. The sex was heavily implied, but Stannis doesn’t recall it? That was my impression from my last audiobook listen.

Winter is coming: I’ve been dreeeeeeaming of a whiiiiiite Christmas…

  4. Brian

Yep, when Davos is in the cells at Dragonstone I believe Davos asks her why she doesnt just make another shadow creature and she says shes taken too much from Stannis but offers to give him the greatest pleasure of his life and implies that it will only cost a little of his life force which is “burning bright” or something to that effect. Thats also why Stannis is now so haggard and unhealthy looking.

  5. Brian

I always understood that Stannis knew exactly what was going on though.

  6. easttexasdirewolf

I have to agree with Chase on this one, as much as it kills me. Stannis has been hitting that and making little baby shadow Stannis’.

  7. Chase

After thinking about it I’m not so sure. As I said in the forum thread, I really doubt he’d be unfaithful to his wife. Stannis may not have much love for her, but she’s still his wife. Stannis is ironclad and I don’t think he would willingly break his vows, no matter the circumstances.

She is draining him to seed her shadow babies, but if they are getting down and dirty in a sexy manner Melisandre must have some supernatural influence over his will.

  8. Pearse

Damn. You guys are busy! Busting out some serious podcasts.

  9. As Ashley pointed out, the scene where Catleyn tries to guilt Ned for leaving happens after Bran’s fall. She’s already out of her mind with grief; she’s just lashing out. It completely makes sense.

The Jon / Arya scene was great. I absolutely think Harington is going to crush this role; his accent is a perfect mime of Sean Bean’s. It’s so obvious he’s trying to be Ned. Notice how “big brother” stern he is with (unless his back is turned from her, and then he’s got a rather self-satisfied smile). Maisie’s great too, because you can feel the hesitation by the look in her eyes. I felt their natural closeness had a forced distance because they were both sad they were parting. (Maisie, playing a younger character, let that conflict play out in her hesitant words and in the slightly fidgety way she handles the sword. Maisie is going to be excellent.) I have a feeling that massive hug comes at the end of the scene.

I agree with Chase that the black Baratheon hair is a pretty huge plot point. I do wonder whether or not they thought, visually, it might not be TOO obvious. When you’re reading a book, if you get hair color constantly thrown at you (which we didn’t until it became something Ned finally noticed), the plot becomes obvious. Which is what we’d get if, on the show, it’s constantly staring us in the face. So perhaps making Robert simply a brunette is trying to draw the obviousness of it away.

I dunno. I would have preferred a black-haired Robert. I’m just trying to think of why they would feel the need to change something they could solve with a wig.

I agree the glimpse we got of the White Walker is fucking horrible. Unless we’re just completely seeing the wrong angle, and it’s so swathed in shadow that lightening the picture completely changes it …

That thing looks like Eddie from Iron Maiden wearing a bad parka. But toothless. What the hell were they thinking? Ran said the designs he personally witnessed reminded him of the Morlocks from that bad H.G. Wells redux of The Time Machine flick. Kill me now. I don’t get it at all. They’re supposed to be these superior beings, not muppets.

I always sort of imagined them as those creepy-ass silent grinning motherfuckers from that Buffy episode “Hush.” But you know, without the suits and ties.

Regarding Tysha: what do you people think of the theory that she became the Sailor’s Wife in Pentos? Re: Cat of the Canals (AFfC)

  10. Chase

I think the Tysha/Sailor’s Wife thing is retarded. That’s one of those absurd and pointless theories I was talking about – the kind where someone pulls out the wildest shit they can imagine simply because EVERYTHING else has been talked to death.

  11. Amin

I think we talked about the Sailor’s wife theory in one of the previous episodes a while back, but I don’t remember which one, lol

  12. Kyle

Yeah FaBio I was going to bring up the Tysha/Sailor’s Wife theory but the conversation led somewhere else and it slipped my mind.

You were a blast on the episode you joined in on. I’m disappointed I didn’t get to converse with you. Next time.

  13. The thing that led me to it the most was the fact that she’d named her kid Lanna, which is a popular name to go with if you are either a Lannister or wish to curry favor with them.

Course there was supposedly another Lannister lost at sea. I forget his name, but he had his own ship; could easily be the Sailor who fathered a girl on the Sailor’s Wife.

  14. mimi

could it be tyrion’s uncle gerry, who was lost at sea?

  15. Chase

I don’t see why this is important. The Sailor’s Wife is a minor flavor character, mentioned offhand by yet another minor character. George likes to plant people everywhere, but I really think this is just another case of crazy, book starved fans overanalyzing everything.

  16. It’s not as important as something like R+L=J, which likely factors into the entire ASoIaF endgame. But even if she was “Nuncle” Gerry’s wife, that’s still slightly significant.

I’d have blown it off too without the Lanna thing.

So I’m betting it does mean something. She’s got Lannister ties in some way, shape or form. AND she’s gonna pop back up again.

    What’cha wanna wager, Chase?

  17. Patsy

Are we sure the thing you all were calling an other really was? Could it have been a wightified Waymar going after (in the show) Gared? If you say the concept art for the Others has them looking retarded, then ok. But I’m gonna suggest that it might be Waymar after he got the bidness from a bunch of Others.

Whoa, just did one of those unexpectant manual checks that we internet addicts do, on the itunes feed, and was thrilled to see the new ep posted so soon! Thanks Ashlley/guys! I have no IRL ASOIAF pals to geek out with so I’ve definitely been looking forward to this ep!

You guys are the best for vicarious excitement about the series. I can always read news articles but that’s sort of internal… There’s just something about hearing a discussion that makes the excitement more real!

All the news of the past two weeks has got me downloading the 5-odd episodes I had missed lately and breaking my 2-year hiatus on the Westeros forums. Time to strap on my fanboy boots again.

  19. israfel070

…so as not to be needlessly mysterious.

  20. Kyle

Wow I dodged a huge bullet. I thought for sure Ashley was going to humiliate me to no end with that “I want to suck” line.

  21. Amin

They might be saving that for girls night out =D

  22. Kyle

    oooo baby

  23. Christina

I’m a fan of sexy foreign accents on the podcasts whenever you can find them… also, I’m only half Korean. The other half is Swedish, so I have an affinity for them sexy Scandinavian boys….
Oh right, and Ice and Fire stuff. It’s cool. That too ๐Ÿ™‚

  24. Sebastian

I’ll take that as a compliment then ๐Ÿ˜‰

  25. Hell, I MARRIED Korean, so I know all about that particular psychose—err, Korean state of mind.

  26. Christina

Oh Lord! I feel sorry for you. Just like I feel sorry for my Dad whenever my Mom starts yelling at him for not reusing plastic garbage bags or not turning off a light because he’s wasting money.

  27. Mimi talks about her Mongolian upbringing, but my in-laws love to brag about how their horse-nomad ancestors used to store food in clay pots underground “between raids” (I love to hear dudes in their 60’s bragging that his ancestors used to go all Dothraki on motherfuckers).

He basically claimed half of Korea is Mongolian via intermarriage / wife raiding.

That’s what I call “Paying the Iron Price.”

  28. Zeyik

I’m going to agree with Chase and Sebastian…George has not finished the book yet. He could take his time and miss the deadline all together. Do not expect ADWD until George says, “I finished the book.”

Another good podcast…As for characters who would have been happy about their death.I think Karstark was satisfied being executed by Rob after he got some measure of revenge.

  29. Amin

Karstark liked that Robb was willing to kill him the old way, at least, but he was whining all the way to his grave.

  30. Zeyik

ok fine but what about Donal Noye, Yoren, and some other brothers of the Night Watch. Possibly Syrio??? Maybe even Oberyn considering he died but still got revenge for his sister and children. UnGregor is still a Gregor that died.

  31. Amin

Donal Noye because he died a badass

  32. Amin

    one-armed badass

  33. Fishsticks

Another good podcast guys. I clicked on the HBO store link So I hope that contributes to the podcast. I actually quite liked the House Stark shirt. With the Wolfs head and the Winter is coming. I agree with Chase (or who ever said it) that putting the house mottos on the shirt is kind of lame. especially The Lannisters “Hear me Roar”, But I think “Winter is coming” works. I may buy me one when I got a little more cash.
Oh and I was Totally stoked to hear that my Westeros pick up line was read on the Podcast. So Thanks for that Sebastion

  34. Jon

i bought $100 worth of eastbound and down gifts from your link! Get ready for a big check! ๐Ÿ˜‰

  35. Chase

    wuv yoo

  36. JAZ

Can’t remember if it’s this episode or last but so glad someone mentioned the creaking door in the Arya/Jon scene from the Maester’s Path. All I could think was when Arya closes that door it better not make a sound. Then creeeeeeeeeeak! Oh, shit!

  37. Lorex

Saw the most resent trailer an I think the things over Jon Arran’s eyes as similar to the ancient custom of placing coins over a persons eyes when they die, nothing more.

  38. Chase

Of course it’s not a made up custom, but it looks hilarious. And dumb. That’s why we’re giggling over it.

  39. Chase

Especially because that is never mentioned anywhere in the books.

  40. I think they give Westerosi death an even creepier aspect.

    I like ’em!

I can’t wait to see those things on Joffrey’s eye sockets. While Jaime bangs the crap out of his sister.

  41. Kyle

    Hot

  42. Chase: “Say bork bork bork”
    Sebastian: “No”

  43. Which brings up the interesting question of “What do Swedes call the Swedish Chef?”

    Just Chef?

  44. Kyle

Ah the old French Fry puzzle.

  45. PaulS

I enjoyed the theories on Dany’s becoming barren, especially a reference to Dany’s uterus being fried by Rhaego. There’s actually a medical procedure that’s used for women with serious risk of endometrial cancer called abltaion therapy where they basically fill it with water, heat it just under boiling for a few minutes and ZAP. no more babies or cancer.

Also simply having abortions/miscarriages can increase the risk of future ones.

  46. Jeremy

I’m so glad you guys brought up the show’s portrayal of Cat’s not wanting Ned to go to KL. Up until I heard you talking about it, I thought I was the only one bothered by it.

  47. rpawson

Comparing Dany to Alexander the Great – hilarious. Alexander actually *did* stuff. He wasn’t all talk, no action. Unlike a certain spoiled princess Targaryen.
