Episode 57: The Pointy End
Episode 57 for the week of June 5th, in which we review the eighth episode of HBO’s Game of Thrones. During this episode recap, we argue the merits of the Arya-stableboy scene, rhapsodize over Hodor’s full frontal, and give all the Golden Manwoody awards to Richard Madden for being the best/sexiest Robb Stark imaginable.

Agreed with the fact that Arya’s first murder was too wooden.
Also didn’t like the lack of a brutal rape during the loot.

To me the epitome of the episode was the scene in Tywin’s tent. Can’t believe you guys talked so little about it 😛
“You wouldn’t know him.” – that had me in tears!

– Definitely agreed with the bad acting of the boy that arya killed. Ruined that scene for me.
– I wouldn’t say that I was disappointed in the mountain men, but they weren’t really what I expected.
– I almost completely forgot about Mormont’s raven!!! Now I’m kinda
mad about that. That raven hasn’t been in the show at all. It’s one of sam’s tools that he uses to get jon elected lord commander. 🙁
– The Jon Umber scene… this may just be me being retarded or something, but in the books i remember that robb said something under his breath to signal greywind to attack Great Jon. In the show, Greywind just sort of took his own initiative. I don’t know… the whisper before the attack just seemed important to me.
-When Barristan was stripped of the kingsguard i only really have one thing that felt wierd about it. The way he took his sword out and held it up like he was wanting to fight. When i read it, it seems like he just took his sword out and everyone else just over reacts while he just sort of chills with it at his side. Oh…and Sansa didn’t kneel down his cloak when she begged for Ned.
All in all, loved this episode. All the nitpicking above it just that… nitpicking. Things that would have been nice to have included. Great episode guys!

Poe to the Pulps
Argh!…. “Lack of Rape?”….ARGH!
There is a pile of corpses that a woman was about to be raped upon.
There are piles of corpses of those who they wouldn’t be able to sell to the SLAVERS.
There is a pile of human heads next to Khal Drogo when he hears Dany’s complaint and he throws the ripped out tongue of his adversary on.
Why do you need a rape to ‘keep it real?’ Man…please.
Also…why did the podcaster’s switch from talking about ‘Martin’ to talking about ‘they’ when the podcasters took issue with how, “they” meaning “HBO” are changing the story….perhaps it wasn’t HBO….wish someone would take note of that, the writer might have something to do with it….just putting it out there.
Kyle, the Boomer rape scene from BSG will appear in the Storm of Sword seasons, when Brienne and Jaime get captured by the Brave Companions.
Of course, the reason that scene is so powerful is because it’s Boomer, not a ‘red shirt.’
Sorry for laying on a rant!
Loves you guys and thanx for putting out the podcasts, regardless of timing. Figures someone must have a life.

I thought it was odd, too, that the Greatjon stormed out of the tent after Robb let the spy go. I thought it would have been pretty obvious to everyone in the planning session that Robb was feeding Tywin false info.

Kyle
Nah he was feeding him correct information.
What the spy and Greatjon didn’t know was that Robb was going to split his force after they crossed the Trident.
If Tywin is expecting 20,000 soldiers to attack he is going to prepare for 20,000 soldiers. Which means he is going to keep all of his troops in one place…..the wrong place.
If the spy had only counted 2,000 and and told Tywin, then Tywin would have had options. Split up his own forces or whatever tactical plan he could hatch. But with his knowledge of such a large force coming his way, he had to keep his entire army in one place.
At least that’s how I saw the whole thing. I’m certainly no battle commander.
The scout did over count, but lets be honest, if you are looking at 18,000 people, it would be pretty easy to over guess a couple thousand. I’ve been in crowds of a couple hundred before and it felt like a thousand. I’ve also been to Gillette Stadium where there are 68,756 seats. If someone told me there were 70,000 people there I wouldn’t know the difference.

My guess was that he told the spy that Tywin should expect all “20,000” men. Therefore, Tywin stays where he is, but the force that shows up is much smaller so that Robb has enough men to break the siege at Riverrun. But, at the moment, I suppose that Robb’s officers didn’t realize what he intended so perhaps that would explain why the Greatjon got pissed off. Of course, when the Greatjon is yelling at him, I would have figured that Robb would have said, “Settle down. I have a plan.”

PS – I totally heard the Podcast’s reading in my head when the Barristan scene was playing out.

As far as the argument about Needle’s stab being too easy, i would say that is was pretty well-done. My theory:
-Needle was a brand-new, hardly used sword, and would have been oiled up pretty well.
-Needle is very skinny, and very pointy-ended, giving less resistance on stabification.
-Kyle’s point about the kid’s baby fat is a good one, as the sword would enter him easier in the fat than hitting abdominal muscles quickly. (Also because he’s a kid, his abs aren’t as developed as an adult’s.
Those last points are less important, but as long as you want me to get technical, I will oblige.
Also, there’s no way Robin Arryn is eating just breast milk. There’s actually not even Vitamin D in it, which would mean that Robin wouldnt even have enough calcium to make new bone. I am definitely in agreement with Mimi’s assessment.

The closing throne room scene was awesome too, in every aspect.
That sly look Petyr gave Varys was Emmy material right there!
Jack Gleeson was indeed great on the throne. One thing interesting about him – he’s actually Irish, and it doesn’t show. Compare with Michelle Fairley, whose Irish twang is very prominent sometimes. The guy’s a good actor, even at that age.
Sophie Turner’s performance must have wrenched quite a few female hearts. T_T
Maester Pycelle has already turned into the guy that everyone loves to hate. Interesting decision by the producers, as I don’t remember him having such a prominent presence and loud mouth in the books.
Farewell, Sir Barristan, you will be missed!
And, of course, KL butler for MVP!

I think my problem with the Needle scene is that in the show it’s obviously done accidentally, whereas in the books, it’s a bit more deliberate:
“Everything Syrio Forel had ever taught her vanished in a heartbeat. In that instant of sudden terror, the only lesson Arya could remember was the one Jon Snow had given her, the very first.
She stuck him with the pointy end, driving the blade upward with a wild, hysterical strength.”
In this scene, the stableboy just kind of walks into the sword.

I am not a fan of all this negativity and spite spewing from Mimi’s mouth about this episode.
lol. I would have gladly taken part in an episode devoted to talking about flawless, fierce, most attractive man in GoT, better than your favs Robb Stark. It would have been a nice distraction from my blubbering over a nameless former New York congressman.
Also Amin is right, this is an episode deserving of five lemon cakes. Flawfree episode tbh.

I once heard my mother talk about it. When my sister and I were both babies, she had to start us on actual food pretty early, because she couldn’t keep up. This was when my sister was feeding her kid, not something random.
So Robert Arryn would be eating plenty of actual food, no matter how much he was getting from Lysa.
