Episode 60: Fire and Blood

Episode 60 for the week of June 19th, in which we review the tenth and final episode of HBO’s Game of Thrones. Like last week, this week’s episode is also SPOILER-FREE. Keep in mind, material from the first book is fair game in this episode, now that the corresponding first season has concluded. We do not, however, spoil future events from later books. We are joined this week by our best friend Larry from Otaku Assemble, and also this guy named Wes. Listen in as we discuss our feelings about the finale, examining in detail the most important scene: Pycelle’s Maesterobics regimen.

Wow this one came out so fast I almost remember what I said in it.

  2. Fishsticks

Oh damn. another one already? I cant wait to listen

  3. Pete

    SOLID SOLID episode. loved it.
i agree that the maesterobics scene was COMPLETELY pointless.
btw, i CAN do the whole poke rap. and i AM a pokemon master.

  4. Tom

Well, other than showing how Pycelle is playing a part and not the feeble old man he pretends he is.

  5. Pete

it’s not really relevant in the context of the books though. where could the TV show go with that? i don’t see it.

  6. Tom

Well good thing George didn’t go back and retcon that in the books then.

  7. pjstwo

I gotta love this scene strictly because someone called it maesterobics…

  8. Rosanna

I thought this was a podcast of ice and fire, not pokemon LOL.

Thanks for the fast upload & great podcast. <3
I love Larry, I hope he comes back after he’s done reading the first book

  9. Anonymous

King in the North scene: “premature kingulation”. Love it! Exactly right, as well- scene was far more powerful in the book.

  10. lane

I think the tyrion scene with tywin…as he told tyrion…at the end, Tyrion gave a real look as if he had given up on Jamie

  11. Ash

man, i used to know the whole pokerap.

  12. zeyik

I am going to assume Mimi edited it this because of the PokeRap at the end.

Am I the only one who sees Joffery=Pussy Robert. I feel like he is constantly trying to be like Robert but his Mom just shelters and coddles him. Robert is just as hateful as Aerys was, we just don’t see him like that because he was constantly with Ned(his buddy) in the books. He comes off as a hard person to Joffery so that is what he tries to be.

When they make those appointments Barristan is still in the Kingsgaurd. They appoint Slynt and Tywin not Sandor.

Good episode, now I assuming we move back to one episode a week with the show being finished

  13. Ash

glad to know i was imagining things. I really think we may have influenced Larry’s knowledge a wee bit.

  14. ranjitb

+1 lemoncake for Hot Pie in eyeliner.

  15. zeyik

    Hotpie is Khal Drogo’s Bastard!!

  17. Kyle

Ooops forgot to put my name in that above comment.

  18. Kyle

Lets* not That’s. I’m bad at commenting.

  19. Exodus

Haven’t listened yet. What the hell? I wasn’t ready for a new one yet lol.

  20. Kennef

Great guests this time. Larry is, of course, awesome, and Wes had some fresh insight as a new convert. I hope you’ll consider having both of them back in later podcasts!

  21. Lezuzius

I also don’t remember when they appointed the Hound as a Kingsguard, they appointed only Jamie to be the head of the guard, but not anybody else.

And they are probably building up the Pycelle vs. Tyrion for the second season.

  22. Rotem

You guys were right about not seeing the hound being promoted to the Kingsguard.

I rewatched that scene and he was not mentiond. Janos slynt was given his Lord title and Tywin was named hand of the king. Ser Barristan was fired and Jamie was promoted to commander, but no word of Sandor…

I have to admit though, I didn’t even notice he was wearing the Kingsguard armor and I completely forgot that he became a member in first place…must.read.book.again.

  23. jude

I am so pissed that that part was written out..and generally, that Sandor’s entire part has been written out, pretty much. I was really looking forward to the conversation that he has with Sansa, who thinks knights are out of a fairy-tale (which is never even mentioned), and him being all “knights are for killing.” That makes his refusal to take the knight’s vow even more significant when they put him in the kingsguard…why are they just having him serve as a background character? I don’t get it…why does ROZ have more lines than he does??

  24. Ash

not only that, but it makes it so there’s no contrast to how he is when he dabs her mouth. that should be a serious wtf moment for people, but instead the average viewer thinks he’s akin to Balon Swann.

  25. Brian

Balon Swann isn’t a KG member yet. He doesn’t join the KG until sometime in Clash of Kings if I’m not misremembering, and I don’t think Swann ever hits Sansa, according to Jaime he is the only member of the “new” Kingsguard that is deserving of the honor, or something to that effect.

  26. Ash

Exactly. At present, the Hound is coming off like that.

  27. Exodus

The nights watch scenes weren’t all word for word. They didnt have the “Be bothered… and keep my vows” line.

  28. Kyle

Very true, but man they were darn close to word for word. I realized it when I found myself mouthing every Jon scene. Almost every line they used was the same I picked out of the book for my recap of that chapter.

  29. Exodus

I dont remember him describing the dragons in the books. I’ll have to read the book over again.

  30. Selena

I just want to throw out there that I always thought Shae was a plant by Tywin. Better the whore you know and what not.

  31. easttexasdirewolf

Good episode. I thought Wes was great, very articulate and had some great observations. Larry…well, I like his podcasts. ADWD in less than 3 weeks!

  32. easttexasdirewolf

I meant I like his youtube videos, not his podcasts.

  33. Tom

I felt bad for Miri. She’s the good character in that scene. Dany and Drogo are planning to kill tens or hundreds of thousands of people for no moral reason and she tries to stop them. Dany is an immoral (but cool) character. Drogo is a career murderer. It’s funny how the POV completely dictates how the audience feels. I think this is somewhat true of like half the characters in ASOIAF, but Dany exemplifies it.

Book Shae didn’t do everything Tyrion wanted. She did EXACTLY the same kind of bitching when they made it to King’s Landing. How she didn’t want to be in the kitchens, how she wanted to go to Joffrey’s wedding and wear jewels… Completely in character.

I think fans misremembering the book, then being vehemently angry about the show not following their false memories is simultaneously one of the must funny and infuriating things.

  34. pjstwo

I don’t know how you can claim Dany is an immoral character… Unless maybe you’re talking only about this scene. Most of her progression throughout the series is due to her sense of morality… She could have purchased slaves, but she instead frees them.. You could argue that her getting the Unsullied is for selfish reasons, but moving on to the other cities and freeing more people is less so…

Also I think it’s an over-simplification to call Mirri the “good” character.. There is a debate as to whether she was active in Drogo’s death, but at the very least she allowed it to happen. It’s also clear that she was somewhat deceptive in her aid to Dany, and did not give her the whole story.

  35. Tom

Dany’s entire plan is to attack a foreign, sovereign land. In what universe is that good?

I don’t see how being deceptive to Dany is bad. It led to Drogo’s death. Drogo is a mass murderer and Mirri stopped him.

  36. pjstwo

She’s doing what she thinks is right.. She thinks she’s avenging the annihilation of her entire family. Your extremist arguments do not serve you well..

And what kind of world view are you taking into this? Obviously Martin’s world is violent, desperate and brutal. The People of the Lamb had a outlook that was optimistic, but not compatible with survival.. I actually find it bad writing that they would still exist as a culture in a land where raiding nomads are the norm, and they are the exception. So your support of their ideals is admirable.. but naive.

And fine, if you hate the Dothraki..we are supposed to as readers. But Dany is actually trying to change them.. so hating both of them doesn’t make sense to me.

  37. Tom

My extremist argument that making war because your pride is hurt is immoral? So extreme. How is killing tons of people that had nothing to do with the death of your family avenging anything? Hell, her husband killed her brother, I guess she should kill the Dothraki (well, she did kill Drogo. You are avenged Viserys!!!).

I don’t hate the Dothraki. Or Dany. I just don’t pretend that they’re good people just because we see the story from their point of view.

You must think Cersei is a moral person if you actually believe your arguments. All she ever did is work for her own survival. Ned is the lamb people to her Dothraki.

  38. pjstwo

Dany develops from a victim of circumstance, who has no idea what is going on other than what her abusive brother tells her, to a woman of her own, trying to do the best she can for her people.

That is one huge leap to say that Dany, who has actively worked against rape and slavery, is the same as Cersei, who has given people who have tried to help her to a known torturer/vivisector.

Selectively ignoring things doesn’t make them disappear. And it weakens your arguments.

  39. Ghost of Poe

My spirit lives on, even though I am gone!!

  40. Astalnar

    Those Ros scenes…..
Instead of developing Ros and her croch, they could actualy make Loras and Renly look like real warriors instead of squishies and schemers…
They could actualy develop Dondarions, Sandor and Blackfish’s character.

  41. SheepHappens

Yes!! I wish I saw Blackfish being awesome or the Hound more and not Ros’ crotch.
They should have promoted the series with “Ros’ crotch is Coming” or “Fire, Blood and Ros’ crotch”.

“We Do Not See (anything but Ros’ crotch)”

    “Ros’ crotch, Family, Duty, Honor”

    I should stop now.

  42. JackieDeex

Varys and Littlefinger need their own spinoff show where they just quip at eachother for and hour.

  43. Yeah…That was pretty fast. Cool.
