Episode 74: What is Dead May Never Die

Episode 74 for the week of April 15th, in which the Podcast of Ice and Fire defy their usual turnaround time to bring you a review of the third episode in the second season of HBO’s Game of Thrones. Guest host Dr. Augustine brings the knowledge in this week’s recap as we gush over Bryan Cogman’s writing and devise hashtags for Theon’s tweets.

This week’s episode includes an extended aftershow for House Manwoody bannermen only, in which we talk about our podcast and its community in great depth. We might or might not have even talked about you.

The aftershow was epic. Im pretty much the clone of Dr. Augustine (early 30ies, actual job, relatively new listener) except i read the books several times before seing the show, and he really expressed of lot of the same thoughts and feelings i have about the podcast and the hosts. Very good job sir!

I think getting Bryan Cognan on the podcast would be incredible. From listening to his commentary on the bluray he would fit right in! He is active on twitter so you should definately reach out to him. He would also be a better fit than a cast member for a spoiler full episode, i would maybe even be a relief for him to be able to speak about the show without worrying about spoiling.

  2. Belwas

I went ahead and started this on twitter:

    @apoiaf @BryanCogman #GetCogmanOnAPOIAF <- this should be trending

  3. Kyle

Haha! Awesome. Thanks Belwas. I’d love to have him on.

  4. Belwas

    Doh! He just tweeted this:

Hi #GoT friends. I’ll be a guest on the @StreaminGarage podcast “Stupid for Game of Thrones” 2NITE @ 8pm (PT) talkin’ #WhatIsDeadMayNeverDie

    Wrong podcast dude 🙁

  5. Ash

i knew i should have called in sick to work last night. i missed a great discussion.

i know i’ve mentioned this before but my hatred of Theon is just the betrayal but it’s more his inability to take responsibility for anything that he does and goes wrong. i’m not sure how they’re going to be able to portray that about his character on screen though. he’s just… such a child about everything, so damn self entitled, and makes everyone else pay for his mistakes/idiocy.

i really hope the Hound shows up soon, i was watching Larry’s review and he talks about his Sansa hate and it made me realise, a lot of Sansa’s redeeming qualities are only seen in her interactions with the Hound. And then he mentions how much he likes Bron because he’s the one straight tell it like it is brutally honest character…. and it made me want to tear my hair out.

#YouGuysStillHaveIt I was laughing my ass off.

Dude Gilly is NOT attractive. aren’t her like eyes crossed? I always assumed she wasn’t attractive and I actually thought the show made her look worse than I’d assumed.

  9. Kyle

Haha! No competition then. Sweet! I get her all to myself.

I don’t think her eyes are crossed, but even if they are…..they are captivating. Damn I’ll stare into those eyes for an hour every week. Hmmm maybe I’m just seduced by her eyes. Ok this is getting creepy. Bring me Gilly’s eyes!! Ok nevermind that’s a different sort of creepy now.

  10. Zeyik

You should watch the UK show skins and she might not be wearing much. Her and Gendry are in it.

  11. Lord Littlefinger

oh and Anne Bolin is hot.

Mimi: I don’t think Brienne in the book is actually ugly. I think its just their perception of her due to her unwillingness to conform to gender normative stereotypes. The same way Theon can’t reconcile Asha with the sister he’s imagined.

  12. Kyle

“oh and Anne Bolin is hot.”

    Dammit now there’s competition.

  13. Lord Littlefinger

Hey man I watched the Tudors. I knew why she got cast. That scene with Renly….was…uh… an excellent portrayal.

  14. Lord Littlefinger

I remember what I meant to say. What plotting are the Tyrells involved in? Besides Lady Olena (and Margery we can’t tell) they all seem pretty dimwitted.

  15. Anonymous

Search “Grand Tyrell Conspiracy” – lots of interesting ideas on that

  16. Lord Littlefinger

i’m highly skeptical if I have to google it….. Yeah, I think its a little bit too complicated. I don’t think Loras is injured either. But the theory basically tries to explain Cersei’s downfall as the result of an organized campaign rather than the result of her own idiocy while simultaneously the plan relies on Cersei being an idiot.

There are some key things I do think are true. First Olena is a cunning political operator, while Margery and Loras are to a lesser degree and Mace is their version of Cersei. I just don’t know how coordinated they are. Loras isn’t hurt. Olena is in kings landing, we never saw her leave. I never thought Margery was having a bunch of affairs, though she might not be a virgin. I also think everyone in kingslanding knows not to trust Pycell he’s equal parts transparent and devious. Obviously Teana Meriweather is on team Tyrell.

I just wouldn’t call any of that a grand conspiracy. Now where I would considered a conspiracy to be involved is if Aurane Waters is working for team Tyrell.

Lastly, why not just kill Cersei or eliminate the Lannisters all together? The whole premise of the conspiracy has to be the Tyrells want Cersei out of power but Cersei but they want Cersei to realize they want her out of power, so the feed on her paranoia that they want her out of power to manipulate her into removing herself from power?

But the Tyrells are the only thing keeping Cersei in power to begin with.

You guys notice the burning chain sigil next to Bronn’s actor in the credits? Pure awesomeness

  18. Lord Littlefinger

Next question any chance the new new logo can be mimi’s iphone photo.

This new one is nice and all but….

  19. Redwoody

    Holy name dropping! 😛

  20. Pete

    Augustine!
    Well done my friend.
I, like you, came to the books because of the tv series. I feel like you represented the noobs admirably.

  21. Linecom1

thanks buddy. despite the fact that I sounded like a giggling girl, I had alot of fun and the hosts were really gracious and put with me constantly talking over them.

  22. jesicka309

Listening to the ep now, just a comment on the opening credits:
Last season there were plenty of eps that didn’t have Winterfell, King’s Landing, the Wall or Vaes Dothrak, yet they are in every single opening credit sequence.
I think they do it like that so as to orient the viewer in Westeros, we know where Kings Landing and Winterfell are, so when they show Pyke, we have a pretty good idea where it is in relation to these well-established landmarks. If they were to omit Winterfell because it wasn’t in the show(like in episode 2), then the viewer could get confused with the introduction of new landmarks.

Winterfell, Kings Landing, the Wall and Vaes Dothrak (or across the narrow sea) are the four establishing locations, and it could be that they plan to add Dragonstone to that.

  23. Usurpationblitz

What a fantastic episode and I think that was the best after show content we’ve had. Good job everyone, and thanks like always.

  24. Blazin_Cha0s

    Nikolaj Coster-Waldau is 6′ 2½” and Gwendoline Christie is 6′ 3″.

  25. Lex

It’s kind of mind-boggling that someone can be so into ASOIAF, having discovered it AFTER Season One of GOT already aired!

That, combined with the fact that I first read the books 11 years ago, combined with all the old jokes you guys make (I’m 32) is making me feel like Barristan the Old or something. :/

  26. Jeremy

Oh, man. If 32 makes you Barristan, I’m positively Maester Aemon over here. 🙂

  27. Lex

BTW, just to clarify… Theon was NOT drowned in the book.

  28. Lex

I know you guys clarified it on the podcast, but I`ve been seeing this misconception everywhere! So many people seem to think Theon was drowned in the book.

  29. mimi

regarding the point about renly’s banner that augustine brought up- it could be very likely and renly and stannis both opted to alter their sigils because joffrey should still be using the original baratheon banners.

  30. Linecom1

good point; stannis’ sigil change is complex and as the book explains had a lot to do with embracing Rhllor, etc…….

my counter-argument for renly is that, didnt joffrey already have his banner changed to the Dual Stag/Lion?

If so, i think it would have made renly less likely to change his original baratheon banner seeing as how no one else was using it. Plus, renly was the lord of storm’s end and had the majority of the true storm land lords behind him, i imagine the storms end lords wouldve been most adamant about staying ttrue to their familiar baratheon heraldry.

  31. Linecom1

the book obviously makes no mention of a banner change for renly, i think wwhats much more likely is that hbo changed the banner for the purpose of visual cinematography, which i would be critical of because it wouldnt make a whole lot of sense, especially in the changing of the banner colors of gold and onyx, which were so characteristically “baratheon”.

  32. LORD YELLOW SNOW

can someone please explain why people thing Verys is a Merling? on the podcast so i hear some Mimi nerd rage

  33. Queensmoot

Such a great episode! I loved the after show so much.

I am one of the 90% that has been listening for a long time but never gets involved in the forums and Augustine has convinced me to get involved!

He’s also totally right about the other podcasts. I won’t even listen to the others because it feels like cheating on you guys. I only gave boiled leather a chance because Amin was a guest!

  34. Betsy

Loved the episode. Augustine really summed up how I feel after listening to you guys through seventy some odd episodes. Someday I’d love to actually be able to talk to you all.

Loved the tv show episode too. I thought Yoren’s story to Arya was a beautiful way to set up her “prayer”. As book readers, we know what she is thinking every night as she lists the names, but we get to be inside her head. I was actaully thinking they were going to leave it out of the show, so I’m happy they set up a way to include it so that it’s clear to the audience.

  35. Rosie

BlogTV with one or more (I don’t know if that’s possible on blog tv) of you guys would be awesome with a few days notice on twitter and facebook.

For your youtube channel, one idea could be that the hosts can answer a set of questionnaires and each one can post up their response. It’s tough seeing as how you guys don’t leave that close to each other (except for maybe Amin & Ashley by like 6 hours of driving).

    Example for youtube video–>

Title: Get to Know APOIAF: “insert name”

    0. Name (& location, your sexiness scale, etc – intro)?
    1. Why should we listen to the podcast?
    2. What do you, as an individual, bring to the podcast (seeing as there are so many hosts)?
    3. Most memorable podcasting session?
    4. Your favourite podcast episode(s)?
    5. Something you wished you didn’t say on the podcast?
    6. Something you wish you did say but someone beat you to it?
    7. Which actor/actress/writer from HBO’s GoT would you like to guest host the most?
    8. Your favourite co-host/guest host(S)?
    9. Which Character’s death would you shed the most tears?
    10. Most gut-wrenching moment so far in the books and why?

Feel free to change the questions or idea up. 😉

  36. Kyle

    Thanks for the suggestions Rosie.

I’m not entirely sure what BlogTV is, but I want to say right away that us doing a video podcast is unlikely. It takes us long enough to organize an audio chat. I can’t imagine having to get dressed, comb my hair, and clean my room before I podcast.

A get to know thing might be fun. We shall see.

  37. Jeremy

Great episode – good job, Augustine.
Looking forward to the “Beyond the Wall” review.

  38. WTF?

I’ve been having trouble listening to the podcast because of all the opinionated attitudes but stuck with it because of the intelligent discussions. This weeks episode was good until the end where all of a sudden you started complaining about other podcasts getting better guests, calling them crap, and CALLING THEM OUT BY NAME! Nerds are generally enthusiastic and inclusive. You guys are more like Soiaf hipsters, above it all and whiny. I would not like to hand out with you at a con. You seem like nasty stuck up jerks.

  39. Ash

it was actually our guest host that was talking about that, we repeatedly said we haven’t really listened to the other podcasts and thus could not comment on their quality.

I was a little worried too when i listened to the podcast as i had to leave partway through recording that the ending would not come off well (which is why i referred to it as podcast masturbation in the chat box), but many people either here, in the chat box, or on the forums discussion of this topic, acknowledged that it wasn’t us talking about how great we were but rather a listener’s opinion of us that many of them share, and i felt much better.

as Mimi mentioned, we are very much against any sort of elitism with in the fandom. I can’t stress this enough. the truth is we do view ourselves as the underdogs and as underdogs hate the idea of any sort of exclusivity, which carries over to us wanting to include as many fans as possible to get involved in fandom. we’re trying to or have launched interactive fan projects because it’s not just our site talking to the fandom but rather a place to bring all us fans together and makes something together that represents the less industry side of this great community.

the after show of the podcast is there to try to show that we’re not professional podcasters but just people who bitch and complain and whine and joke. does it make the listener take us less seriously? yeah, that’s the point. we’re not hiding anything and maybe if we were more PC and more careful about our opinions we’d get more recognition, and that frustrates us some times, but we made a choice not to go that direction and haven’t looked back.

  40. Amin

Hey. Ashley covered it pretty well, to reiterate shortly that that discussion was in the aftershow chat after the main episode was over and it was one of our fans from the forum guest hosting who decided to share his own passionate opinion.

We were a little startled by the strength of his opinion, but we vary rarely censor things on our podcast. Our podcast has always been big about free speech, which has caused problems for us in the past, but that is part of the nature of our podcast: (http://podcastoficeandfire.com/forum/viewtopic.php?f=3&t=861).

I generally avoid listening to other ASOIAF podcasts to avoid burning out, so I said I could not comment on their quality. I know we were pretty bad when we started out and it is a learning experience for everyone starting up recently. We have guest hosted on other ASOIAF podcasts before (boiled leather, Saso’s podcast, Bjork Brothers, etc) and I am always open to doing so. We have had guest hosts from other podcast on our show before (the most recent being in Girls Night Out 3, I believe) There is more than enough room and niches for a multitude of podcasts in this area.

  41. Re: WTF

Not to mention a lot of the other podcasts do suck. And it wasn’t the hosts who made the comment but a guest. At any rate, its a freaking podcast. The hosts often criticize one another and themselves. The actors on the TV show, its producers. When you broadcast yourself inter the public sphere and are open for criticisms valid an otherwise.

A process you yourself seem to be aware of as you’re engaging it, right, now.

  42. Pycelle : “Lord Arryn! He knew, he knew the tr-truth abou-about the Queen and he planned to act, to tell King Robert!” Tyrion : “So you poisoned him?” Pycelle : “No! Never!” Tyrion : “But you let him die! Made sure he succumbed!” Pycelle : “Lannister, I’ve always served Lannister!” Tyrion : “Get him out of my sight! Throw him in one of the black cells!”
