Episode 77: The Old Gods and the New

Episode 77 for the week of May 6th, in which we review the sixth episode in the second season of HBO’s Game of Thrones. Kyle takes and breaks a holy vow of silence and some Dany-hate rises to the surface in Mimi’s absence. High definition audio of clicking and snack eating is provided by the power of Ashley’s “it just works” Mac.

I’m getting ‘file not found’ – and it won’t download either. Anyone else getting this?

  2. Lady Griffin

    Theon never killed anyone?

Even if he didn’t knife the miller kids, he permitted their murder to cover his bullshit.

    He cut off Farlen’s head.

He killed one of his own men, again, to cover his bullshit.

Theon’s a great character, but he’s no saint. No amount of sympathetic history changes the fact that he’s a war criminal and turncloak. Hiding behind his men makes it worse.

I felt bad for him throughout the scene. Alfie Allen nailed it. You can see he’s torn between the right choice and scraping any shred of respect he can from his father’s men. It’s not until Dance with Dragons that Theon owns his mistakes, so it’s nice to get that conflict early.

And oh man. They need to write Emilia Clarke new dialogue. FIRE FIRE BLOOD BLOOD (screams at dead Irri) WHERE ARE MY DRAGONS?!?!!11111

    Still love her, though. 🙂

That is something that bothered me in Clash, though. If Xaro wanted the dragons, why didn’t he kill Dany and take them? She’s in his house with twelve men. Someone stealing them feels like a more logical conclusion.

    Suck it, purists.

Also: Arya’s ten, not three. Old enough to list Tywin, Joffrey, Cersei as the most valuable kills. Amin’s right in that it would have completely fucked the plot, so we get Weese instead.

I need you there to smack some knowledge into me while we’re recording. It’s so easy to get facts wrong in the heat of the moment and the longer I watch the show and go without a reread the more things I forget and get wrong.

I still believe that if Theon didn’t have Reek by his side those miller’s kids would still be alive.

Theon always seemed like a puppet to me. Having his strings pulled and buttons pushed by everyone and anyone who wanted to.

    I feel bad for him.

  4. Lady Griffin

So let me get this straight: he did not inhale? 😛

I feel bad for him, too. People despise him as much as Joffrey, but he’s too pitiful to hate. Those miller kids would be alive if Reek wasn’t there, because Theon’s too spineless to commit to anything not whispered in his ear.

No probs, Kyle. I just dislike when people hold characters to different standards, instead of judging them by facts. Ashley was spot on when she said people are fathoms more forgiving to Arya because she’s their favorite character, whereas Sansa gets flayed alive. People rage at Catelyn because her chapters suck, then forget she gave good Robb good advice, and parlayed tactfully with Renly. Taking Tyrion was a dumb decision….in retrospect. Letting Jaime was unforgivable, but no worse than anything Robb or Ned did. People will still shriek that she FORCED Ned to go South and DOOMED House Stark, because, you know, logic. 😀

Theon’s one of my favorite characters, but dude’s got blood on his hands. It makes his tragedy all the sadder.

fuck my shitty work internet. i wait all day as your shows download and then go to listen and it is 1 minute long. rrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr

  6. Lex

Pretty shocked by Ashley’s lack of reaction to the Hound scene. SanSan fans across the internet were raving about that!

Glad to hear I’m not the only one who likes the Spice King. He’s funny and reasonable.

Regarding the whole annoying entitled Dany thing, I do think it’s intentional. They’re trying to show her desperation, frustration, and helplessness.

    I LOL’d @ Amin’s whiny Dany voice: “Where’s Daario? Get me Daario!”

  7. Lex

Also, you guys warned us that this was a low-energy episode… but Kyle sounded way higher energy than usual! Like he drank 3 cups of coffee before the podcast. Maybe he was being fueled by his Theon-rage. 🙂

  8. TheMessenger

Ros’ actress was visiting the first 5 minutes, so he couldn’t have his audio on until later.

  9. Careless

I somehow only heard Amin in my left headphone and Ashley in my right. :<

  10. Amin

Yes the episode was an experiment in stereo output (since I was not editing it on my usual computer, the final mp3 came out that way). What it is supposed to give you is that ambiance experience when listening to it with headphones, like you are sitting at the discussion table with me on your left and Ashley on your right. Unfortunately the clicking took a spot at the table as well =P

  11. Careless

I just imagined you with a pitchfork and barbed tail whispering in my left ear that this show needs more Ros.

  12. Kennef

If you decide to keep doing this (personally, I would prefer it if you didn’t), I would appreciate it if you made the stereo less extreme. You can do a lot with just a little stereo panning. Also, the clicking was really annoying, but I would rather have an episode with clicking than no episode at all. 😉

Apart from that, another fun episode!

  13. Thanners

I also would prefer less extreme stereo.. I tend to like to wear just one earpiece, depending on where I am, and in this case it meant I lost half the podcast.

  14. Steve

Definitely not a fan of this stereo. If you are going to keep doing it, make it a subtle effect, not 100% left ear then right ear.

Thanks, keep up the good work!
    Steve

  15. Ash

clicking was my fault, we were in a rush so i didn’t bother trying to fix my input

  16. Ash

I was also half asleep at the time, so yeah, not my best night,

  17. Exodus

you were fine. Ya the clicking was annoying and preferrably keep that out of future episodes, but we’ll get over he 😉

  18. Exodus

    Silent but Strong

Another great podcast, but just wanted to agree with Lady Griffin and emphasize that Theon did personally execute Farlen, the kennel master in Clash. It was him, instead of Rodrick, after Bran and Rickon escape but other than that it was pretty much exactly the same in the show. I’m glad they kept that execution in the show. It’s one of my favorite Theon scenes because it takes him several swings before he gets Farlen’s head off, unlike Ned who can do it in one with Ice. I also understand using Rodrick in the show since he’s someone the viewers recognize, but they kept the tone of that scene the same as in the book. There are plenty of opportunities in the future of the show to make Theon more sympathetic, so I thought executing Rodrick was perfect.

I’m so glad there wasn’t any purist rage over this episode. It’s getting harder and harder to like the ASOIAF fandom as this show progresses because of the purists with there constant complaining. You guys do a nice job of voicing your dislikes without over doing it. Thank you for entertaining me and not sucking the fun out of watching the show.

  21. Lady Griffin

    Agreed!

  22. Lady Griffin

p.s. – I listen to Cast of Thrones, and about lost it this week when one of the podcasters complained, without a shred of irony, that the Night’s Watch scenes had “too much snow.”

    THE FUCK.

  23. FTWard

Thanks for the cast! Dany hate/Sansa love/ Ygritte getting a “Snow”ball! Your circle of hate cred is taking a hit. Hope GoT finishes strong.

  24. Sam

My right headphone doesn’t work, so all I got to hear was Amin talking to himself for five minutes before I checked the comments here and found out the problem.

I think “Reek” could still be used in the show, rather than just bringing in Ramsey Snow to take over Winterfell. It’s possible that Ramsey’s men could get into a skirmish with Theon’s men and “Reek” will be brought back to Winterfell as a prisoner. I really hope they don’t drop the “Reek” angle because it’s important later to Theon’s story. I mean they could still skip the “Reek” angle and force Theon to be Reek later but it wouldn’t have the same affect. The audience wouldn’t get why he’s being called Reek at that point.

  26. Jeremy

Sansa is Rarity! A real LOL moment for me. Nice one, Ashley.

  27. I think Rarity is nothing like Sansa… but maybe that’s because I like Rarity (my second most favourite pony) while Sansa has grown somewhat to me, but still she isn’t in my top 10 characters in the song of ice and fire books or the game of thrones TV series.

Gotta love the scene after the credits. It was like being at a Marvel Movie.
