Episode 142: The Lion and the Rose

Episode 142 for the week of April 13th, in which we review the second episode in the fourth season of HBO’s Game of Thrones. We are joined by Michal (Inkasrain) during the course of the episode.

Notes: Like almost all episodes of APOIAF, this episode has spoilers for all published books in George RR Martin’s ASOIAF series. As of April 16th, we have a growing list of listeners attending Ice and Fire Con 2014 along with 2 podcast hosts: one more full weekend ticket has opened up right now off the waiting list.

Ramsay’s “girlfriend” with the bow was indeed the same girl who seduced Theon last year. Same actress.

  2. @UncyD

And was the girl being chased the other girl?

  3. Lex

Not sure if everyone caught this, but the sword names were references to other famous fantasy swords. Stormbringer is from Michael Moorcook’s Elric series, Terminus is from Gene Wolfe’s Book of the New Sun, and I think Wolfsbane is from… Fable III?

  4. Rodrik Harlaw

I think Stormbringer is actually a reference to Deep Purple album (and song in that album).
In the books Martin uses another reference to the band (the color of the wine in the end of the chapter is described as deep purple, as opposed to its color in the start which is dark red).

I think Stannis burns Axell for not tearing down his idols after Stannis ordered it. He probably doesn’t care if they worship other gods in private.

  6. Lex

Yeah, I’ve seen people complaining about Stannis saying Axell was an infidel… but I think people are missing the subtext. Stephen Dillane’s performance is much subtler than that. Look at his face, and tone of voice, when he says “he was an infidel”. It’s obvious he doesn’t really care about that.

Also, a note: George isn’t the only one who’s written the Iron Bank into the show, it was first discussed in the third episode of last season.

  8. I’m confused about your confusion about the true culprit behind Joffrey’s poisoning. Is this just because you don’t trust Littlefinger?

Other fun fact: New Tommen Baratheon was once Martyn Lannister.

Guys, we have 3+ seasons that explicitly pronounce the names of the characters. The Varies, Dayvos stuff is killing me. All of which have gone through GRRM.

The only thing he seems to pronounce differently is Baratheon. GRRM says BaratheON where as the show goes with Barathian.

  10. Lex

I can’t stand the “Varies” thing either, but I think that’s how it’s pronounced in the audio books which is why a lot of fans say it that way.

This podcast seems to refrain from correcting people for their pronunciations, which is probably a good thing, as constant correcting would be annoying.

Also, even GRRM pronounces a lot of things differently. He says Dothrak-eye (rhymes with pie), and Brienn-ee (ugh), among other weird things.

  11. Kyle

I don’t really care how each person pronounces the names. GRRM has said in several interviews that there is no right or wrong way, just say em how you want to say em. So if that works for George, it works for me.

That guy next to Varys really looks like Pycelle, but Cersei already sent him away by the dwarf show.

  13. No One

That’s totally Pycelle! That sneaky bastard snuck back in. Either that or he jogged there and back maesterobics style. Maybe he’s already counting on Margaerys support by then. Cerseis regency is supposed to be over when Joff gets married.

I never thought about this before, but why did they use Sansa as the mule? Why hinge an assassination plot on a girl wearing a particular hair net to a wedding. And I don’t buy that it’s to frame her, So far everyone that assumes Sansa did it assumes so based on her motives, none of them have ever hit on the fact that her hair net was missing a jewel. It seems to be Sansa would be just as framed if Oleanna had dropped some poison from a ring into Joffrey’s drink.
