Episode 177: The Dance of Dragons

Episode 177 for the week of June 7th, in which we review the ninth episode in the fifth season of HBO’s Game of Thrones.

Notes: Like almost all episodes of APOIAF, this episode has spoilers for all published books in George RR Martin’s ASOIAF series. The aftershow section contains potential spoilers from a The Winds of Winter chapter.

I hope Olly shooting Jon is an exact mirror of Ygritte’s death in season 4. Jon is having a hard stare down with Sam for some reason and then an arrow sprouts from his chest. Bewildered, Sam whirls about to see Olly, who nods dramatically.

    Good episode review!
What is that awesome song in the after show? I think I know it but cant’t really place it.

I believe it’s a version of the song that plays at the end of season 1 with Dany’s big scene.

Thank you, but that is strange coming from Ros. (But I’ll take it). It was fun to podcast with Team Stannis fans who were mostly on the same page.

I 2nd the Greg & Aziz love, they are some of my fav’s along with Amin. I could just hear the depressed sound in Aziz’s voice, as he is a big Stannis fan (he’s normally so upbeat). When I watched that episode, I told the people I was watching it with that there are some big Stannis fans that are flipping tables and throwing remotes right now.

    and yet…

    Aziz is the one who
    a) focuses on the difference between show and book – sees the consistency of showStannis’s character (all of the 3 are not too negative, but Aziz is still the most positive :-) )
    b) “reads” D&D’s comment as hint at Stannis’s decision NOT solely Shireen’s death/burning
    c) brings in the fact that bookStannis very much entertained the idea of burning Edric for similar (comparatively) “minor” reasons – not the end of the world/Azor Ahai situation

I guess we’ll have to wait – I really really hope George can release TWOW before season 6 airs, otherwise… even a big of a fan as myself might seriously consider not watching the next season… :(

holy moly the pretension in this episode, wow, it just reeks of smarminess. I won’t dispute that the books are more rewarding than the show, and that this season was probably the worst so far, but why even cover it if all you’re going to do is rip it the whole time?
