Episode 28: Win A Sexy Corset

Episode 28 for the week of June 28th, in which we discuss chapter 55 of A Game of Thrones, debate whether Jorah Mormont is a rad ass dude or a rat ass dude, and examine Chase’s personal ambition to grow a beard in his nether regions.  Also something about bloodriders. Our guest host this week was Lauren.

Keep an eye on the blog for more updates regarding future episode topics.  And in the meantime, leave those sexy voicemails for APOIAF on Skype!

You need to post links to a lot of the things that you guys are talking about. The Khal Drogo guy, the new miniatures, etc.

Commenting as I listen to this…the name day being two years after one’s birth is only a wildling tradition. The only time we see it is with Gilly’s son and Mance’s son. In Westeros though, babies are named at birth, like the new Tyrion for example.

Massive cool points to Chase for the Dylan Moran quote.

Just so you know, my husband started calling me “woman wife” after listening in on this. Yeah.

Know this is off topic but just re-reading ACOK-the part wher they parlez with Sir Courtney Penrose. Penrose is a true bad-ass! I love how he talks to Stannis’s party-espescially where he threatens to piss on the flaming sword and put it out….

When Drogo finished his vow to go to Westeros and kill and rape everyone, all I thought was “FUCK YEAH!”

Seriously, I think the way George wrote it, he did it very well. It is one of the most evoking moments in the books, with the gradation and everything.

And then, in the next Dany chapter he dies and brings one of the most anticlimactic moments in the books. 🙁

  7. Former Cub Scout

Not that anyone asked, but Webelos is actually an acronym for WE’ll BE LOyal Scouts. It’s the last rank in the Cub Scouts before graduating to the Boy Scout level.

I got a “What if” for ya…. What if Amin and Mimi shacked up????

How do we win the corset?

I hate Jorah Mormont. Until listening to this episode, I’d never compared him to Robert, even though they’re kinda similar in the whole ‘I’m a loser whose been dealt a shitty hand and I hate my life’ way.

I guess I can sympathize with Jorah’s shit end of the stick, but one thing I can’t stand is when a creepy older man hits on a young girl. I get that there aren’t real pedophilia laws in Westeros, but from a modern perspective, its icky. Also, he didn’t even have the balls to really betray her – instead, he was a coward about it, didn’t own up to it, and gave her the old “it started out that way but that was before I fell in love with you.”
Sounds like a romantic comedy for fucks sake.

I didn’t trust Jorah from the outset. He seemed to move to Dany’s side too quickly for someone who was supposed to be working for her brother. The backstory that was revealed regarding his wife didn’t help put him in a favorable light in my eyes. He became a man willing to do anything to try and win the favor of a woman who I don’t think loved him. The revealed treachery just cemented his place in my mind as a dishonorable coward. Afraid to tell Dany the truth, and afraid to return to Westeros and face judgement.

    Two things:
    – Do you think Pycell is in league with the Tyrel’s at the end of feast for crows?
    – Could the 3 headed dragon be Tyrion, Quitin Martel, Victarion Greyjoy? (sorry bout the misspelling there)

  13. Chip

I forget the exact part of the story but there was one podcast that talked about Dany either having the vision of 3 headed dragon, or 3 people coming for her or something. It’s definitely Tyrion, Quentyn, & Victarion. Although I see Tyrion and Quentyn riding the other two dragons, and Victarion bringing her army over to the Westeros.

Does anyone have any theories about why the tapistries were so important to littlefinger?

  15. CJB

I’d guess that he’s planning on presenting them to Dany when she finally makes it to Westeros.

    What’s up guys?

Did everyone get their WILD CARDS gang tag on the SA forums???!?!?!!!!

Doing my ACOK reread and just read the part where Ramsey Bolton comes back to Winterfell and takes over. Mr Martin’s is such an excellent writer! It’s like I’m watching this unfold in a movie as I’m reading. I love the part when the Bastard of Bolton and his knights come out of the battledfield smoke in a column. Poor people of Winterfell-I was so angry that he killed Sir Roderick, Clay Serwin and Maester Llewyn. (Spelling may be wrong on the names) Anybody else just struck by a particular scene in these books?

Sorry only get to listen to this every once in a great while. In response to this podcast, specifically about the bloodriders not killing themselves; I think they didn’t kill themselves when Drogo died because Dany came out of the fire. Think about it, you are sworn to protect and die with your Khal, he dies and you do the funeral ritual, but then his wife comes out of the flames unhurt (for the most part) and with 3 dragons. COME ON! They didn’t follow Khal Drogo to their grave because they knew they had found the greatest Khal(eese) there ever will be. Or at least that’s what I would think if I were them.
As for what will become of Jorah, I think most people are mad at his betrayal of Dany, but I believe he will come back and definitely redeem himself to her (and to the readers), and probably die doing so.

I can see Jorah Mormont coming back to Dany at some pivotal/climactic part in the story, and probably dying in the process. I agree with the sentiment that he will be dead at the end of the saga, and dying or sacrificing himself in some way would the ultimate act of redemption for him in Dany’s eyes. And it seems true to his character.

Don’t see him going to the Wall, although that could be intriguing too. Exiled by Ned Stark, he joins the NIght Watch with Ned Stark’s bastard son in charge – and the bastard wields the Mormont family sword to boot. AW-kward.

(still not finished ADWD at this point, having a hard time getting into it/through it)

I went back all the way to the beginning of the podcast’s reread of AGOT, because I was listening to the ASOS episodes backwards. I’m having a hard time getting past the Sansa hate and rampant misogyny (especially on Chase’s part). I’m hoping it gets better?

  23. Probably so, given that Ashley gets more of the spotlight since then (she loves Sansa) and we’ve lost some of our hosts since then. In my opinion, we don’t really hit our stride on chapter reviews until A Clash of Kings. There’s a reason why the first 50 episodes aren’t main listed as download options like the subsequent episodes.
