Episode 69: Guys Night Out V4
Episode 69 for the week of March 4th, in which we host our fourth Guys Night Out episode. Our returning guest hosts from the previous Guys Night Out are Elio Garcia [ Westeros.org], Alex [Tower of the Hand] and Apocalypse Dan from our forums.
FaBio from House Greywatch [Winter is Coming] was unable to make it at the last second, but Stefan from the [Boiled Leather] podcast was able to sub in for part of the episode. Kyle rides in commanding the rear guard for the episode, as some of the guys leave to “make dinner.”
In this Guys Night Out, we start with a lengthy discussion about the upcoming season 2 of HBO’s Game of Thrones TV series. We subsequently move into covering a smorgasbord of topics and theories from A Dance with Dragons, in another episode of Tormund Giantsbane proportions. As always, the discussion is PG25 and contains spoilers for all published A Song of Ice and Fire books.
Notes: This is the [map] that we look at ~2 hours in.
In other news, Amin recently guest hosted again the Boiled Leather Podcast.

What’s funny is being someone who only read the books after watching the first season of the TV show, its kind of funny. I’ve basically lost interest in the TV show. I basically found it impossible to keep to remember who any of the character were in the TV show. I think at 10 episodes a season, they probably aren’t long enough to do justice to the books.

Amen! I read the books after the series too (although my dad read the books up to feast as they came out) and when I watched the show again, I thought the show lost a whole dimension of depth. Like the guys in the podcast said, there are definitely reasons for that besides the medium shift.

Good episode and I thank you all for doing it.
I just wanted to comment about the bleep that about blew my brian out of my head during the description about the women you would fuck, marry or toss of a cliff.
Not only did it almost kill me because it was so loud, but it drives me nuts when I don’t know what is said. =x
Anyways, good episode, but I was really wishing that you guy might finish the Clash re-read before the second season started. But it doesn’t look that way now.

Also, there was no reason Theon’s ploy to take winterfell shouldn’t have worked. Balon said he was planning on sacking the castle anyway. So it was perfectly reasonable for Theon to think he’d be reinforced and rewarded for saving Balon the trouble of sacking Winterfell. Instead Balon isn’t impressed, cause Theon lived there, he’s like ofcourse they let you in Theon you’re one of them.

Hey Hey Hey, there’s no way Catelyn is anywhere near as stupid as Ned. There’s no way listening to Catelyn would have led Ned any further astray. And its very hard to believe Ned was going to tell Robert no. I mean I can’t reconcile the honorable Ned Stark with turning a direct request from the king. Even though he says he will.

If you remember where the “Defense of Darkstar” article is, I’d be interested to see how the author explains themselves.

Why does every one think it’s the WoW intro music? It is NOT it..

The intro music that we usually use on our podcast is from WoW. At least that’s what I’ve been told. I know nothing about WoW. So it’s not the WoW intro music. It’s our intro music from WoW.
Wow that’s a lot of WoWs.

Haha, that it is. But uh yeah it’s not the same track
how it’d be confused as they sound similar. Whatever
it is, it’s become synonymous with apoiaf so I’m cool
with it.

Why is apocalypse dan in here? He talks way too much with his nasally voice.

Why are YOU here?
If it was up to me Apocalypse Dan would be in every episode. He is a smart cookie and personally I feel the discussions often is more interesting when he is around.
The fact that he has a distinct voice is also a clear plus in my book. It just gets confusing when the hosts have similar voices.

have to agree, Apocalypse dan is a good guest host who keeps the conversations alive and brings out good points every now and then.!

And here I was just about to feel a bit of enthusiasm for Season 2 (after a mediocre Season 1 imo). Listening to Elio & Co discussing it made me downright depressed. I think Im going to have to hate it.
I really liked this episode. But the next Guys Night Out you should consider including Mimi (seeing as she is the biggest dude on the show
)
Personally I think I prefer it with 5+ hosts. I know Amin mentioned that he favored fewer hosts a couple of times. I think the advantages of more hosts outweighs the disadvantages. I feel like the chat gets more lively and discussions more heated with more people.
Also apoiaf episodes can NEVER be too long!

Thanks for the extra-long podcast guys.
I’ve only been able to listen to the first 45 minutes or so and this is the first stuff I’ve heard about the second season of the TV show and it makes me wanna let out one of those deep, emotional Darth Vader NOOOOoooo’s.
If some of the stuff that you guys speculated about actually happens you’re going to have to get Chase to make an appearance during the TV season to pick it apart because he’s the best at that shit.
